The Minnesota Department of Transportation has resumed work on Highway 61 at the Silver Cliff and Lafayette Bluff tunnels north of Two Harbors in Lake County since Sept. 8. This work will finish replacing the lighting systems in each tunnel.

Motorists can expect single lane traffic through the tunnels Monday through Friday at noon controlled by a signal system. Portable barrier will be in place along the center line through the project duration. Work will take place first at Silver Cliff Tunnel then move to the Lafayette Bluff tunnel.

There will be no traffic impacts on the weekends, and closures will take place at one tunnel at a time. Work is expected to last through late October.

Work Zone Safety Tips:
• Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
• Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.
• Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
• Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at www.511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
• Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Do the zipper merge.
• Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
• Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

The pool deck at Two Harbors was loud again last August 24 as athletes from swim and dive, soccer, volleyball, cross country, cheer, and football packed into the bleachers for the annual Fall Sports Kickoff Pool Relays. It’s become one of the most spirited preseason traditions in town, and this year’s crowd made sure the energy lived up to its reputation.

The relays themselves delivered the usual mix of chaos and fun. Kids churned through raft races, pool-noodle sprints, t-shirt relays, and the doggie paddle event that has become one of the evening’s staples. The cannonball contest closed things out, drawing cheers from the deck as athletes tried to out-splash one another.

The season starts soon, but for one night, the pool belonged to every sport in town, all of them kicking off fall together.

If you’re out and about, you’ll notice that work crews have installed temporary curb extensions in Two Harbors at the intersections of 7th Street and 4th and 5th Avenues. The temporary curb extensions and zebra crosswalks at those intersections grew out of local Safe Routes to School efforts and pedestrian/bicycle safety planning initiatives.

According to Lake County, these intersections were chosen for the demonstration project because many kids and families use them to get to Minnehaha Elementary School. These temporary changes are intended to make it safer for people walking and biking to cross the street and gauge public opinion on whether they should be made permanent.

Lake County Public Health, Lake County Highway Department, and the City of Two Harbors are collaborating on this project with support from Minnehaha Elementary School leadership. The Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) provided funding for the project. SHIP is a Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) initiative. One of its priorities is creating safer routes for walking and biking across Minnesota. Grants are allocated to county public health agencies such as Lake County Public Health to address those priorities.

The curb extensions will be removed before the snow flies so plows can get through. Based on community feedback from surveys distributed to residents and observation of how drivers respond, the temporary bumpouts may be installed again next year. They could eventually become a permanent part of the road when it is rebuilt.

The 32nd annual Two Harbors Art Fair took place August 14–16 outside the Earthwood Inn, just off Hwy. 61 in Two Harbors. Despite a few moments of questionable weather, the weekend was a resounding success.

If you missed the summer art fair or loved it so much you want to return, you will have another chance this fall. The autumn art fair will also take place outdoors at the Earthwood Inn during the following dates and times:

Darla Abrahamson, Vice-President of Lending for Two Harbors Federal Credit Union (THFCU), is retiring after 22 years of service.

Abrahamson’s professional history includes various roles in banking, finance, and law. In 2002 she accepted a part-time loan officer position with THFCU and, with the exception of a brief sabbatical, has been lending for the credit union ever since.

Darla will remain busy in retirement. She is a board member for the Lake County Chamber of Commerce, and is Secretary for the Lakeview Women’s Golf League. She has plans to travel, and to enjoy more of what she loves – golf, fishing, and her nine grandchildren.

Credit union members and the Two Harbors community are invited to wish Darla well at a special open house, Friday August 28th at 3:00pm at THFCU’s office, 801 11th street. Her final day with the credit union will be September 4th.

Two Harbors is undergoing a wealth of changes lately, from the upcoming addition of the Agate Bay Waterfront Park to the recent groundbreaking for the North Shore Flats apartment complex. One change, however, is less expected and far less pleasant. The outcome of a special meeting held the evening of August 17th has resulted in Two Harbors’ Paul Gauche Memorial Band Shell being declared unsafe for use and will likely end in it needing to be torn down.

Although the Band Shell is not on the National Register of Historic Places, it has a place near and dear to the hearts of many locals, being one of the central symbols of the heart of Two Harbors.

In a situation like this, often the best way forward is to look ahead to the future and decide to make something better, safer, and stronger than ever before. The Band Shell might be gone soon, but something greater could be built in its place, if the people of Two Harbors choose to do so.

The Lake County Fair kicked off on Thursday, August 6th, starting strong with Senior Citizen and Veterans Appreciation Day. Honored guests received free gate admission alongside a special luncheon celebrating the community’s seniors and veterans.

Throughout the weekend, visitors enjoyed horseback riding competitions, judging showcases, and interactive exhibitions. One of the biggest crowd-pleasers was Ski’s Exotic Petting Zoo, where attendees could get up close with unique animals they wouldn’t normally encounter. Holding a young kangaroo and a baby alligator was easily one of the highlights of my visit!

The All-American Lumberjack Show and Camp kept the energy high all weekend. The camp gave kids a hands-on chance to try log rolling in the water, with the top competitor taking home a prize. To cap off Friday and Saturday evening, MWA Pro Wrestling put on a show that never failed to thrill.

Every year brings fresh activities alongside beloved traditions like the petting zoo and MWA wrestling. So don’t miss out and make plans to go next year!

The North Shore Flats groundbreaking took place on Wednesday, August 5, in Two Harbors, marking the official start of construction on a major new workforce housing development along the North Shore.

The project features a 75-unit market-rate workforce housing apartment development designed specifically to provide affordable and market-rate housing options for local workers, families, and community members. It will offer studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with heated garage parking, in-unit laundry, elevator access, and a state-of-the-art gym over the three-floor complex.

Construction of North Shore Flats is scheduled for completion in late summer or early fall next year, roughly 12 to 14 months after the August 2026 groundbreaking.

The sweet, vibrant sounds of the ukulele are set to take over the region this month. The Two Harbors Ukulele Group has officially announced the upcoming Silver Creek International Ukulele Carnival. This exciting four-day event will run from August 13 through August 16 at the Lake County Fairgrounds (1381 Fairgrounds Road, Two Harbors, MN).

The main concert schedule includes:
Thursday: 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM
Friday: 7:00 PM
Saturday: 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM

Festival organizers emphasize that there are absolutely no entry fees or hidden costs for the programming, repeating a simple mantra for the weekend: “Did we mention it was all FREE?”
