Beyond the heartfelt blessings, we also made a small but meaningful effort:We chose not to use shrink wrap, in order to reduce plastic waste.
In the past, we did use shrink wrap to bundle the offerings, but when we delivered them to the organizations, we saw piles of plastic waste left behind. That made us realize we could do better. Now, if there’s incense ash on the offerings, it can simply be wiped off with a cloth. Even the outer labels are laminated so they can be reused year after year, avoiding single-use waste.
We also used to rely on a lot of cardboard boxes. While we always reused them for shipping, this year we rethought the arrangement at the Ghost Festival site. By consolidating the offerings into fewer boxes—only separating the prayer flags when needed—we’re able to cut down on the number of cartons used, while leaving more space for others to place their offerings.
Every “Blessing Box” is not only for prayers and for protecting families, but also carries with it goodwill and mindful intentions.
May these blessings bring peace to the heart, while also lightening the burden on our planet.
