🍃Seasonal Word Leaves: “Uzuki” - April in Japan, When Spring Reaches Its Full Bloom
季節の言の葉:「卯月」ー 春爛漫、日本の4月

“Uzuki” refers to the fourth month of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, and its name is believed to originate from the blooming of unohana (deutzia) flowers during this season. Additionally, April is also called “Uetsuki” (Planting Month), as it marks the time for planting rice seedings. As cherry blossoms fall, farmers begin preparing for rice planting, and by the time unohana flowers bloom, full-scale planting, full-scale planting is underway. This period is deeply intertwined with Japan’s agricultural traditions.

「卯月」は旧暦の4月を指し、この時期に咲く卯の花が 名前の由来とされています。これに加え「植月」とも呼ばれ、稲の苗を植える季節を表します。桜が散る頃に田植えの準備を始め、やがて卯の花が咲く頃に本格的な田植えが行われるなど、日本の農耕文化と深く結びついた時期でもあります。

BUZZWORD OF THE DAY :)

😻 メロい
🗣️ pronounced: Meroi
🖊️ definition: Entranced

🔖Background | 背景:

The word "メロい" (meroi) is said to have originated from "メロメロ" (meromero). "Meromero" describes a state of being completely infatuated with someone or losing one's composure.

This term has been in use since the Kamakura period (1185–1333), where it originally referred to "peeling off thin layers" of something. During the Edo period (1603–1868), its meaning shifted to something similar to "mesomeso" (sobbing or being weak-hearted). By the Meiji period (1868–1912), it evolved to describe "flames rising and burning easily", represented by the word "meramera".

Over time, the meaning further developed, and today, "meroi" is used to describe a state of being completely captivated by something and losing control or composure.

Word Leaves | 言の葉 🍃

This month's theme is "Kisaragi." In Japan, February is a special time when, despite the lingering cold, one can sense the approach of spring. Many events celebrate the transition of seasons, such as Setsubun and Risshun. In this "Word Leaves" section, we introduce words related to the theme and the season of the month. As you explore each word, like leaves changing with the seasons, we hope you discover the subtle transitions and profound depth of the Japanese language.

今月のテーマは「如月」。日本の2月は、寒さが続く中にも春の訪れが感じられる特別な時期です。節分や立春など、季節の変わり目を祝う行事が多く行われます。この「言の葉」セクションでは、その月のテーマや季節にちなんだ言葉を紹介しています。四季折々に色づく葉のように並べられた言葉一つひとつを眺めながら、日本語の繊細な季節の移ろいとその奥深さを感じ取ってください。

Voice-Word Art | 言技🎗️

Referring to around February 4th, "Risshun" is one of the 24 seasonal divisions (nijūshi sekki) in the traditional Japanese calendar, marking the beginning of spring. Despite lingering cold, it has long been cherished as a time to sense the first signs of the season’s change.

2月4日頃を指す「立春」は、二十四節気の一つで、暦の上では春の始まりを意味します。寒さが残る中にも、春の気配を感じ始める時期として古くから親しまれています。

"Risshun" is often used to mark the start of spring or as part of seasonal greetings. For example, in letters, you may find expressions like "Risshun no koro" (Around the time of Risshun) as a seasonal greeting.

「立春」は、春の始まりを感じる頃や、季節の挨拶として使われます。例えば手紙で時候の挨拶として「立春の候」と表現します。
