Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Wednesday stepped down as House Speaker amid controversies over budget insertions and alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

"Today, with a full heart and a clear conscience, I tender my resignation as Speaker of the House of Representatives," he said.

Romualdez explained that his decision was in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s call for accountability in government.

He noted that Congress has the duty to confront issues in government spending and work toward restoring public trust.

The former House Speaker added that his decision was not an act of surrender but a demonstration of leadership, stressing that "sometimes, the greatest act of leadership is the grace to let it go."
