You will if you’re accepted into UCLA’s 2025-2026 Professional Programs in Screenwriting or Writing for Television.

App deadline: August 18. Classes begin September 29.

Led by seasoned industry professionals in the heart of Los Angeles, these graduate-level certificate programs have played a key role in helping writers receive BAFTAs, Humanitas Prizes, Oscar nominations, and Academy Nicholl Fellowships, in addition to earning credits in popular television series and films.

Here are three essential tips for screenwriters:

• Show, don't tell - Let character actions and dialogue reveal information rather than using exposition or narration to explain what's happening.

• Every scene must advance the story - If a scene doesn't move the plot forward or develop character, it should be cut no matter how well-written it is.

• Start scenes late, leave early - Enter each scene at the last possible moment and exit as soon as the dramatic point is made to maintain pacing and engagement.
