Transpositive PDX: “Asylum for Trans People from the U.S.”

This week on Transpositive, we dive into one of the most urgent and unsettling conversations facing our community today — the growing number of transgender Americans who are considering or actively seeking asylum abroad. As the political climate in the U.S. becomes increasingly hostile toward trans people, many are asking a question once unimaginable: Is it still safe to live here?

Joining us for this roundtable are hosts Nichollet, Emma, and Sheila, who explore an article by Brynn Tannehill titled “The Case for Transgender Asylum from Trump’s America,” published in Dame Magazine. The article argues that recent policies and government actions toward transgender people mirror the early stages of historical genocides — the slow erosion of rights, access, and visibility that can lead to the destruction of a community. From bans on medical care and school participation to threats against employment, military service, and even passports, the piece lays out a chilling landscape that many fear may soon become life-threatening.

In this discussion, the hosts grapple with the article’s central claim: are transgender people in the United States facing the beginnings of genocide? Emma reflects on the difference between persecution and genocide, urging careful language even as she acknowledges the escalating danger. Nichollet and Sheila bring personal and historical perspectives, comparing the current moment to earlier eras of invisibility and repression — from Stonewall to modern legislative assaults on healthcare and education. Together, they consider what survival might look like today: strategic visibility, community solidarity, and the painful question of whether flight is the only option for safety.

The episode also touches on stories of resilience, like that of Dr. May Laauo, a physician forced out of Texas for providing gender-affirming care who has since relocated to Oregon. Her experience highlights both the dangers of the current political crackdown and the vital importance of states and nations that still protect the right to exist.

Join Transpositive for this powerful and sobering conversation about survival, resistance, and what it means to seek freedom in a country that is turning against its own people. Tune in as we ask: what happens when “home” itself becomes unsafe — and what can we do, together, to keep each other alive?

Coming Up on Our Show: The Politics of Fear and the Real Lives of Transgender People 🎙️

This week, hosts Emma, Nicolette, Jeremy, and Sheila will discuss the federal government’s recent proposal to create new domestic terrorism categories, including so-called “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violence and Extremism” (TIVE) and “Nihilist-Inspired Violent Extremism” (NIVE).

We’ll break down what these terms mean, where they come from, and why so many advocacy groups and researchers are calling them propaganda. Far from being neutral categories, these labels were invented by partisan think tanks as a way to reframe transgender people as a national security threat. Just like the “superpredator” myth of the 1990s or the “communist infiltration” panic of the 1950s, TIVE is about manufacturing fear in order to justify government crackdowns.

The reality, of course, is very different. Transgender people are not more likely to commit violence. In fact, we are far more likely to be the victims of violence, especially trans women of color who face disproportionate rates of hate crimes, homelessness, and discrimination. Yet this narrative flips the truth on its head — painting the oppressed as the aggressors in order to justify surveillance, restrictions, and stigma.

On Tuesday’s program, we’ll explore:

How the government and right-wing think tanks are inventing new threat categories to generate fear.

Why claims like “50% of school shootings are trans-related” are false, misleading, and dangerous.

How propaganda about “transgender extremism” overlaps with other government narratives — such as attempts to justify sending federal troops into Portland, a city that remains largely peaceful despite how it’s portrayed.

The importance of pushing back against fear-based propaganda by amplifying the lived realities of trans people: resilience, community, and the simple daily work of surviving in a world that too often misunderstands us.

This is not just about transgender rights — it’s about civil liberties for everyone. If the government can invent a domestic terrorism category out of thin air to target trans people, it sets a precedent for targeting any group that challenges the status quo.

And yet, beyond the myths and misinformation, there is so much more to tell about trans lives. Our stories are not only about struggle but also about joy, creativity, and survival. From the teen who finally feels seen, to the elder who comes out after decades, to the artists, parents, teachers, and neighbors who bring light to their communities every day — trans people are not defined by propaganda, but by the fullness of our humanity.

Join us for this important conversation — one that resists fear, reclaims truth, and celebrates the resilience and beauty of our community.

Transpositive is a biweekly program in Portland exploring themes important to those who identify as Transgender, Gender Non-Binary, and Gender Non-Conforming. We connect listeners with the ongoing activism, culture, and dialogue happening in Portland and beyond.

TranspositivePDX: Reducing Gun Violence and Mitigating Harm

This week on Transpositive PDX, we will be addressing the recent tragic school shooting in Minneapolis, a moment that once again calls us to reflect on the deep crises facing our country and our communities. As with all acts of mass violence, we mourn the lives lost, we hold their families in our hearts, and we recognize that the impact of these events stretches far beyond the immediate community where the tragedy occurred.

For transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse youth — who already face higher rates of harassment, violence, and exclusion in schools — the threat of gun violence is yet another reminder that the systems meant to keep children safe are failing. As a program dedicated to lifting up the voices of our community, we believe it is vital to situate this tragedy within the larger landscape of both national politics and lived daily realities for trans people.

On this episode, guest hosts Emma, Nicolette, and Sheila will discuss not only the immediate implications of this shooting but also the broader context of gun violence in America. We will explore the long history of Democratic efforts to pass gun control legislation — efforts often supported by the majority of Americans — and the counter-efforts of the gun lobby, which has consistently mobilized money, influence, and fear to block even the most basic protections for our children. From background checks to assault weapons bans, we will examine how policy debates play out, who benefits from the status quo, and why the resistance to reform is so deeply entrenched.

At Transpositive PDX, we roundly condemn this and every act of school violence, and we affirm that the solution to school shootings is not scapegoating vulnerable groups, as too often happens in the national media, but rather the passage of meaningful gun control legislation. We also recognize that trans youth, their families, and their allies experience these tragedies in uniquely vulnerable ways, and we will uplift those perspectives that are too often left out of mainstream discussions.

KBOO has always been committed to free speech, community radio, and opening the airwaves to conversations that commercial media ignores. In that tradition, this episode of Transpositive PDX is not just about analyzing the failures of national politics, but about building awareness, solidarity, and action. We believe that our community deserves to be safe, to be heard, and to imagine a world where schools are places of learning and joy, not of fear and violence.

We invite you to tune in to this important and timely discussion. Together, we can resist narratives that divide us and instead build movements that demand accountability, care, and change.

Join us live on Tuesday, September 16th at 6:00 PM on 90.7 FM in Portland or stream from anywhere at kboo.fm. In Part One, we speak with members of WeShine PDX, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe, transitional shelter in neighborhood-based micro-villages throughout the Portland metro area. Founded in 2021 by a group of grassroots neighborhood organizers, WeShine (Welcoming, Empowering, Safe Habitation Initiative with Neighborhood Engagement) builds and operates micro-villages that offer wraparound services, robust volunteer involvement, and pathways to permanent housing. Their core values of inclusion, dignity, and respect guide their work as they strive to reduce unmanaged encampments and support vulnerable, unsheltered adults. ICE Detains Asylum Seeker at Portland Immigration Court
Attorneys file emergency petition on behalf of transgender asylum seeker

PORTLAND, Ore.–President Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency used deceptive and unethical practices Monday to strip a transgender asylum seeker of her due process rights, detaining her immediately after asking a judge to terminate her case in immigration court.

O-J-M (a pseudonym to protect her identity) was at a hearing for her asylum case in Portland when ICE’s lawyers sought a dismissal of her asylum case. After she left the courtroom, ICE agents arrested her in an attempt to end her asylum claim, transfer her, and rapidly deport her.

The 24-year-old sought asylum in the United States from Mexico after suffering violence on account of her gender identity and sexual orientation at the hands of a dangerous cartel. Fearing for her life, she fled and sought asylum in the United States in September 2023.

Attorneys with Innovation Law Lab filed an emergency habeas corpus petition on behalf of O-J-M, challenging ICE’s actions to unilaterally strip her of her ability to seek asylum in removal proceedings and attempt to rapidly remove her from the country.

“This is a dangerous attempt by ICE to circumvent due process, speed up deportations, and eviscerate the right to asylum,” said Innovation Law Lab Attorney Jordan Cunnings, who represents O-J-M. “This unethical behavior goes against the values we hold as Oregonians, ensuring that everyone is welcomed and included in our state.”

Immigration attorneys say the tactics mirror a troubling national trend. O-J-M had properly filed her asylum application, but ICE appears to be attempting to place her in expedited removal, a rapid deportation process with minimal protections.

“Courthouse arrests destroy the integrity of our legal system and undermine the rule of law,” said Cunnings. “We ask immigrants and refugees who are fleeing violence to abide by an asylum process. Detaining them for showing up to court is heartbreaking and harmful to our justice system.”

Her gender identity matters

O-J-M is a transgender woman who sought safety in Oregon, one of the most welcoming and inclusive places for transgender people in the country. Transgender people from across the country come to Oregon to be safe from violence and free to be themselves.

The Trump Administration has stated, via executive order, that transgender women will no longer be detained with other women, meaning that they will likely be held with male detainees, greatly endangering their safety.

“No one, including transgender women, should be incarcerated in unsafe detention facilities where their lives are at risk,” said Reyna Lopez on behalf of Oregon for All. “Transgender people are part of what makes our Oregon beautiful, and they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect just like every other Oregonian.”

Oregon for All is a coalition of 90+ organizations led by APANO, the ACLU of Oregon, Innovation Law Lab, Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Just Transition Alliance, SEIU, PIRC, PCUN, and Unite Oregon. The Coalition advances immigrant justice to build a more welcoming and prosperous state through education, research, organizing, and policy advocacy. Together, we foster thriving and resilient communities. For more information, visit Oregonforall.us.

Join us on Transpositive PDX this Tuesday, June 3rd at 6:00pm, as we kick off Pride Month with a powerful two-part program celebrating trans resilience, creativity, and advocacy on KBOO Community Radio.

In Part One, we speak with acclaimed playwright Mikki Gillette and performer Billie Jane Dawson about the world premiere of Tears and Glitter, part of the double-bill Glitter & Desire opening May 30th at Portland’s Backdoor Theatre. Set against the backdrop of a red state grappling with white nationalism and anti-trans legislation, Tears and Glitter follows a group of trans activists who organize and resist. Featuring an ensemble of eleven trans actors in trans roles, this new work from Salt & Sage Productions and director Asae Dean brings authenticity, urgency, and defiant joy to the stage.

In Part Two, we share the story of Ruthie and her 17-year-old transgender son Luke, who was recently denied a passport by the federal government — despite being a U.S. citizen — simply because he is trans. Ruthie and Luke open up about the emotional toll of this injustice and what it takes to raise and support a transgender teenager amid growing national hostility toward trans youth.

This week on Transpositive PDX, we are proud to welcome Sheryl Weikal, also known as The Leftist Lawyer—a brilliant and fearless trans trial attorney, author, and advocate for marginalized communities. Sheryl runs a “name-your-own-price” legal practice, representing people facing eviction, foreclosure, discrimination, and incarceration—often those most ignored by the legal system.

Sheryl is admitted to practice law in Illinois, multiple U.S. District Courts, and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and has been admitted pro hac vice in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and California. A member of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, Sheryl also teaches continuing legal education (CLE) classes on Fair Housing and is known for combining legal expertise with radical compassion and justice-centered advocacy.

📚 Sheryl’s highly anticipated memoir, I Was an Abomination: A Story of Trans Survival in Conservative America, comes out next month. In it, she shares her powerful journey of growing up trans in a conservative, homeschooled family; surviving conversion therapy; fighting the state to become a lawyer; and ultimately discovering love, authenticity, and the strength to live as her true self. From crafting a doll of herself at age eight to show her parents who she was, to building a life of resistance and resilience, Sheryl’s story is a profound rebuttal to the dangerous myths pushed by public figures who deny the existence of trans children.

She is also the author of Circus Courts: How Racism and Greed Poisoned American Justice and What You Can Do About It, and her writing has appeared in Burn It Down, Chicago Magazine, Deadspin, Vox, Fangraphs, and more. She has written for the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education and received accolades including a 2019 SABR Award for baseball journalism and a 2023 Clio Reisman Award finalist nod.
