NAMESAKE NOTES: On Memorial Day, we proudly pay tribute to a key leader in our airport's history:
- Captain Leland F. Norton, namesake of San Bernardino’s Norton Air Force Base, was born in San Bernardino and died in World War II
- His aircraft was struck by enemy fire over France, and Captain Norton courageously remained with his aircraft until his crew bailed out
- The Distinguished Flying Cross, the highest Air Force recognition, was awarded to Captain Norton after his death
- The San Bernardino Air Force Base was renamed the Norton Air Force Base in his honor.
Now called the San Bernardino International Airport, we are reminded of Captain Norton every day through Norton, our specially trained and hard-working wildlife patrol dog. Our spirited pup helps make our runway safer for pilots and passengers by chasing birds and ground-based critters away from the path of airplanes.
