“Tilted Axis has carved out a unique literary niche, and has caught the attention of critics and prize juries, landing major awards and winning acclaim for writers who were unknown in the Anglophone world.”

We’ve been featured in the ! Thank you Alexandra Alter for writing this brilliant piece that takes a deep dive into the importance of publishing radical literature in translation. It’s not often that a tiny indie press gets to step into the limelight, but that’s not why we do this work. We do it because we think it’s important, we work hard despite all the risks.

“At a moment when nationalism and isolationism are rising in both Europe and the United States, the window that literature can provide into other cultures feels essential, Alfaro said.

‘What we publish, and who we are and the community that we’ve created, it’s exactly what this climate is trying to eradicate,’ she said”

Many people have worked hard to make Tilted Axis Press possible. Thank you to all our authors and translators who have entrusted us with their work, to all our readers and the bookstores that keep us afloat through championing our work, and finally to all our staff, past and present, for the dedication, care and sheer graft you all put into bringing these books to life.

The British publisher Tilted Axis specialized in innovative translated literature. It won them major awards. Now they’re coming to the U.S.

A photograph of Delicious Hunger from Sim Chi Yin, the photographer of the still image on the cover of the novel. The still is taken from Sim Chi Yin’s “Remnants” series — of a DIY prosthesis made by anti-colonial guerrilla fighters who took on the British in the then-colony of Malaya.

Delicious Hunger is a book about the moments in and between warfare, when hunger is so palpable it can be tasted, and the natural world becomes an extension of the body. Deftly translated by Jeremy Tiang, Hai Fan's stories are about a group of people who chose to fight for a better world and, in the process, built their own.

From 1976 to 1989, Hai Fan was part of the guerrilla forces of the Malayan Communist Party. These short stories are inspired by his experiences during his thirteen years in the rainforest.

Huge news! Shiori Ito's self-directed adaptation of her her memoir, Black Box Diaries, has made the Oscar Shortlist for Best Documentary Feature!

Upon publication in 2017, Ito’s account was integral to the movement in Japan and became a necessary catalyst for cultural and legal change. As international outlets covered every step of her story – documented in the BBC film Japan’s Secret Shame – her book launched a societal reckoning. At the end of 2019, Ito won a civil case against Yamaguchi.

Ito's personal story is the kernel of a searing journalistic exposé, exposing how Japan’s relatively low official rates of sexual assault mask a culture of victim-shaming and institutional failure on the part of the police, law and media to bring perpetrators to justice.
