A HOME FOR TOMORROW - Ismael Medina Manzano’s transformative apartment project in San Sebastián defies traditional domestic boundaries, advocating for a more flexible and inclusive approach to modern living.

As the idea of home continues to shift, Spanish architect Ismael Medina Manzano’s Unplanned Domestic Prototype offers a provocative reimagining of what a living space can be. Located in San Sebastián, in an apartment built in 1966 and shaped by the rigid needs of post-war Spain, the project is a departure from conventional architecture, designed to anticipate the unpredictable rhythms of modern life. Rather than a home designed around a predefined idea of its inhabitants, the compact apartment allows for flexibility and an engaging dialogue between people and space.

CRAFTING COMFORT - High in the Swiss Alps, a traditional wooden chair chalet hotel opens up to reveal a relaxing midcentury-influenced interior that mixes local craftmanship with subtle design touches from its owner’s home country of Wales.

The Brecon, the latest addition to this quaint ski resort, offers precisely the kind of hospitality and design-led experience the town was lacking. Founded by Wales native Grant Maunder, who has visited the area since his family took their first ski trip to the village 40 years ago, the hotel delivers quiet escapism, rather than the sort of loudness some parts of Switzerland are better known for.

Revolutionary architectural colour theory - In 1931, modernist architect Le Corbusier devised an architectural colour palette for his radical designs, later extended in 1959. Inspired by this, Malin Glemme, founder of Swedish company Layered, has launched a new rug collection, La Palette 1931/1959, which takes a deep dive into intense colour

Harmonious designs exude a certain visual prowess, and Malin Glemme has long been seduced by such balanced compositions. ‘It’s interesting when there are different elements that contrast with each other, such as femininity and masculinity, or warm and cool,’ says the founder and creative director of Swedish interior design brand Layered. ‘It’s always been a theme for me.’

LOVE STORY - Drawing upon the life and philosophy of Jørn Utzon, the Ferm Living x Utzon – Can Lis Collection, realised in collaboration with the Utzon Center, pays homage to an architect whose work transcended conventional boundaries.

Beyond their enviable seaside settings, there is little in common between Sydney Opera House and Can Lis. The Opera House was conceived as a landmark, and wound up changing the image of an entire country. Can Lis was born of humbler intentions. Forced to resign from the Opera House project, Jørn Utzon sought respite in Mallorca, ultimately creating this series of sandstone pavilions where he could be secluded from the world, and at one with nature.

Situated a two-hour drive west of Helsinki, the former tuberculosis sanatorium takes a humanistic approach to modern architecture.

In 1928, an architectural competition was announced for the construction of a 184-bed tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, a tiny town on Finland’s southwestern coast. Among the architects who heeded the call was the 30-year-old Alvar Aalto. He had recently completed the Alajärvi Municipal Hospital, an unassuming low-rise structure that drew on Italian Renaissance monasteries and vernacular Finnish architecture.

Launched earlier this year, BAINA’s new towel collection with Estudio Persona explores the interplay of light and shadow.

Drawing inspiration from the phenomena of ‘umbra’, the darkest part of a shadow cast by an object, the collection explores the interplay of light and shadow. ‘The natural tones were carefully selected by both teams,’ explains Jessie Young, co-founder of Estudio Persona.

With his love of woodworking embedded from an early age, Alfred Newall has turned his passion into a thriving career with his studio now in its eighth year. Seamlessly blending traditional skillsets with a classic aesthetic, Newall’s meticulous attention to detail can be seen in each project he undertakes and, as the desire for craft is reignited in younger generations, he hopes to be a great example in how transforming your passion into a business can be done.
