Hamas has brushed off President Donald Trump’s latest threat and reiterated that it will only free the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for a lasting ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The militant group accused Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of trying to back out of the ceasefire agreement they reached in January.

Lauryn Hill made a surprise appearance and Stevie Wonder performed at a memorial ceremony for Grammy-winning singer and pianist Roberta Flack in New York. Flack died last month at age 88. Her intimate vocal and musical style made her a top recording artist of the 1970s and influential long after. On Monday, a “Celebration of Life” memorial for Flack featured Hill covering two of Flack's top hits and Wonder doing his own, “If It's Magic." The public “Celebration of Life” for Flack took place at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.

India has won another global cricket tournament with a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final. Rohit Sharma led the chase Sunday with 76 off 83 balls and Lokesh Rahul’s unbeaten 34 helped India cross the finish line on 254-6 in 49 overs.

When Tampa Bay players leave Steinbrenner Field following the New York Yankees’ spring training home finale on March 23, their staff will launch a 120-hour transformation of the ballpark for the Rays’ season in exile from storm-damaged Tropicana Field. By the time the Rays return for their March 28 opener against Colorado, more than 3,000 unique signs and advertising boards will have been installed. The large letters spelling “YANKEES” above the first- and third-base stands will have been covered with Rays markings along with the interlocking “NY” in the center of the clubhouse.

Israel has cut off the electricity supply to Gaza. The move has affected a desalination plant producing drinking water for part of the arid territory. Hamas calls it part of Israel’s “starvation policy.” Sunday’s announcement came a week after Israel suspended supplies of goods to the territory of more than 2 million people.

The New York Mets led the major leagues in spending for the third straight season in 2024 and have totaled $1.36 billion in payroll and luxury tax over four years under owner Steve Cohen, exceeding what the Marlins, Pirates and Rays each have spent on players in the past 21 seasons. The Mets established a $333.3 million regular payroll record, according to figures finalized by Major League Baseball this week and obtained by The Associated Press.

Firing squads have a long and storied history in the U.S. They've served as a punishment for mutiny in colonial times, a way to discourage desertion during the Civil War and a dose of frontier justice in the Old West. Now, they are considered by some to be a more humane alternative to lethal injection. South Carolina on Friday is scheduled to conduct the first firing squad ex*****on in the U.S. in 15 years.
