This View of Life is an online magazine that reports on evolution the way that Darwin imagined it-as a theory that applies to all aspects of humanity in addition to the rest of life. TVOL makes modern evolutionary science accessible to the public on topics that are vital to our personal and social wellbeing, including health, education, environment, economics, politics, culture and the arts.

🎯This Wednesday, we bring controversy to the table: Who is More Phobic About Science--Conservatives or Liberals?

This was one of our first interview videos from This View Of Life cycles. In this edition, David Sloan Wilson made that question to Jonathan Haidt, author of The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided By Politics and Religion.

🌎New TVOL Article is Up!

Agustín Fuentes and Nathan Lents explore how the living world continually generates diversity and how s*x evolved as a powerful way to mix and spread it. Despite the enormous variety of s*xual systems across plants, animals, fungi, and protists, they show that one theme appears again and again: the differentiation of gametes into two main types.

This simple pattern—anisogamy—has shaped everything from reproductive strategies to social behaviors, offering a window into both the shared history and remarkable flexibility of life’s s*xual evolution.

S*x in nature is far more complex than a simple male–female divide, emerging instead as a diverse, overlapping continuum shaped by biology, development, and culture.

🔎In her introduction to This View of Life’s new series on "S*x, Gender Diversity, and Evolution," evolutionary biologist Joan Roughgarden argues that science must clarify its terms amid growing political confusion.

🏳️‍🌈She proposes reaffirming s*x as a biological binary based on gametes while expanding gender as an evolutionary spectrum of bodies and behaviors across species. Roughgarden calls for replacing outdated “selfish gene” models with a cooperative framework rooted in social selection—one that better reflects the diversity of life and the complexity of gender in nature.

🔎For over a decade, This View of Life Magazine, an initiative that is part of ProSocial World, has made evolutionary science accessible to readers and listeners globally, ensuring it's not just for those in academic circles.

📚 Through podcasts, articles, discussion groups, and our peer-reviewed journal, we translate complex ideas into real-world understanding. But keeping science open takes resources. That's why we're raising funds to grow this work: expanding our reach, spotlighting more voices, and keeping all of it open to the public.

📢As federal research and science budgets are cut, independent platforms like ours have become essential. Evolution is more than a scientific theory—it’s the framework that helps us understand cooperation, adaptation, and resilience in a changing world. And, in a world full of noise, clarity matters.

🎯In this dialogue, Dr. Shermer speaks with David Sloan Wilson. Dr. Shermer is a science writer, historian of science, and executive director of The Skeptics Society.

They went over some compelling topics, as, for example, why evolutionary psychology is an equal opportunity offender for liberals and conservatives, or why both laissez-faire and command economies fail. They also ask themselves about morality, social Darwinism, and policy as a branch of biology, in terms of natural selection, group selection, and multi-level selection.

This podcast was recorded on February 1, 2019, as part of the Science Salon Podcast series hosted by Michael Shermer and presented by The Skeptics Society in California. However, we are firm believers that these topics are still relevant in today's polarized society.

🌿 Nature doesn’t draw straight lines, and neither should we. In this special conversation, evolutionary biologist Joan Roughgarden and geneticist Nathan Lents explore how s*x and gender diversity shape life itself - from fish that swap roles to humans who defy binary boxes.

They’ll unpack why variation isn’t an exception in nature but one of its greatest strengths, and how embracing that truth can transform both science and society.

: 🧠 Empathy is Contagious

New research shows simply learning that others can empathize across political divides makes us more curious and less likely to escalate conflicts.

Empathy spreads like ripples in a pond. When we see others bridging divides, it activates our own capacity for understanding over judgment. Maybe the key to healing polarization isn't just practicing empathy—it's making visible the empathy that already exists around us.

🌿Science is a public good. But in today’s climate, access to reliable knowledge isn’t guaranteed. That’s why This View of Life exists: podcasts, articles, and discussions that bring science directly to the public – for free.

📢Over the past year, more than 35,000 podcast listens, over 50 new articles, and impactful discussions have shown how deeply people want this. But keeping science open takes resources.

We’ve set a $100,000 goal to sustain and grow this work. Your gift today keeps knowledge out of paywalls and in the hands of the public.

Misinformation is loud. Together, we can make science louder.

🧠How do you actually optimize your brain for better performance?

In this must-watch interview, neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Huberman ( Lab) sits down with Patrick Bet-David to provide a masterclass on actionable brain science.

They move beyond theory to discuss the practical tools anyone can use to improve focus, accelerate learning, and manage energy. This isn't just about "biohacking"; it's about understanding the core mechanics of your nervous system.
