🎖️ On July 19, 1944, at the tender age of 19, S/Sgt Charles Abady was Killed in Action over France. Born on July 22, 1924, in New York City to Isaac and Mollie Abady, both immigrants from Syria, he grew up with two brothers. Tragically, their mother Mollie passed away in 1934.

Serving as the tail gunner on the B-26 Marauder 41-31974, named “We Can’t Miss Victory,” Charles was shot down near Trois Moulins, France.

He is interred at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France, in Plot K Row 18 Grave 8. His younger brother, Abe Isaac Abady, served in the Navy during the Korean War and passed away in 2017.

🎖️ PVT Charles Hughes was Killed in Action in Italy on July 20, 1944, at the age of 32. Born on December 7, 1911, in Thayer, West Virginia, he was the second oldest of five siblings.

In 1932, he married Gladys Reba Lilly from Beaver, West Virginia, and they welcomed at least one daughter into their family. Charles served with the 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division during his military service.

He now rests at Arlington National Cemetery in Section 34, Site 3402. Gladys eventually remarried and passed away at the age of 80 on November 17, 1996. Notably, two of his three brothers, James and Paul, also served in World War II, both surviving to pass away in 1974 and 2003, respectively.

🎖️ On July 26, 1944, CPL Robert Bartlett tragically lost his life during Operation Cobra near Saint-Germain-d'Elle at just 22 years old. Born on November 14, 1921, in De Grey Township, South Dakota, he grew up with three brothers and a sister.

Enlisting in the Army, Robert served as a crewman on an M5A1 light tank with A Company, 744th Tank Battalion. On that fateful day, their tank was struck by an anti-tank weapon, and both Robert and a fellow crewman were presumed to have perished in the flames, leading to their classification as Missing in Action.

Years later, in 2018, a historian from the DPAA uncovered two unknown sets of remains recovered from the battlefield, later identified as CPL Bartlett. His brother Jack was alive to witness his return, and CPL Bartlett was laid to rest with full military honors on August 10, 2024, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt, South Dakota.

🎖️ On August 22, 1944, T/Sgt Arthur Beatty was Killed in Action in France at the young age of 23. Born on May 16, 1921, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, he was the second of six children born to Elvie and Grace Beatty.

In 1944, Arthur married Mary Elizabeth Freeman, though they did not have children. He served valiantly in the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, before his tragic death.

Arthur's final resting place is at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France, specifically in Plot A Row 22 Grave 23.

After his passing, Mary eventually remarried and lived to the age of 68, passing away in 1992. Arthur's younger brother, Reece Beatty, also served in the Army during World War II, but he passed away in 1973 at 51.

Sgt Criner lost his life when the B-17 he was crewing was shot down near Memmingen, Bavaria, Germany. After the war, his remains were recovered and laid to rest at the Florence American Cemetery and Memorial in Italy, specifically in H Cemetery Row 4, Grave 7.

🎖️ On this day, we remember CPL Robert Bartlett, who was Killed in Action during Operation Cobra near Saint-Germain-d’Elle on July 26, 1944, at the young age of 22. Robert Amos Bartlett was born on November 14, 1921, in De Grey Township, South Dakota, where he grew up with three brothers and a sister.

🎖️ Today, we remember 2Lt Dennis Chamberlain, who was killed in action over France on August 3, 1944, at the age of 22.

Born on February 22, 1922, in London, England, Dennis was the second of three sons of Samuel and Alice Chamberlain. His father served valiantly in the US Navy during both World Wars.

Dennis joined the USAAF and flew Lockheed P-38 Lightnings with the 429th Fighter Squadron, 474th Fighter Group, based at RAF Warmwell.

On that fateful day, he was flying P-38 44-23671 when he was shot down while attacking ground targets near Gennes-sur-Glaize in France.

He is interred at the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial in France, Plot O Row 5 Grave 3.

Dennis’s brothers, Robert and Donald, also served in the Navy during World War II, passing away in 2013 and 2009, respectively.

🎖️ On this day, we commemorate PVT Orazio Emilio, who was killed in action in Southern France on August 16, 1944, at the age of 25.

Born on February 25, 1919, in Massachusetts to Italian immigrants Frank and Ida Emilio, Orazio was the fourth of seven children.

Drafted in 1942, he served with G Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. His brave efforts took him through North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and ultimately to Southern France, where he lost his life during intense house-to-house fighting.

PVT Orazio Emilio rests at the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial in France, Plot C Row 10 Grave 4.

Three of his brothers also served in World War II and survived: Benjamin “Bennie” Emilio, Romeo Emilio, and Alfred “Fred” Emilio. A highway was later named the “Emilio Brothers Memorial Highway” to honor their service.

🎖️ Remembering USMC CPL Ernest Bittenbender, who was killed in action on Tinian on July 29, 1944, at just 22 years old.

Ernest Reitnauer Bittenbender was born on February 26, 1922, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, the second of four children born to Charles and Lottie Bittenbender.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps and served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, where he was tragically killed near Masalog Point on Tinian.

CPL Ernest Bittenbender is laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii, Plot F 768.

His younger brother, Melvin, also served in the USAAF during World War II and lived to the age of 95, passing away in 2019.
