Everybody saying Drake is a free agent now because he dropped 3 albums at once, but I think people are misunderstanding how these modern label deals actually work.
When you sign a deal reportedly worth $400M-$450M with a company like UMG, it’s usually not just about delivering albums anymore. These are 360 deals. Labels want a piece of everything touring, merch, publishing, visuals, brand partnerships, the whole ecosystem.
So yes, technically Drake may have fulfilled the music-delivery side of the contract with Iceman, Habibti and Maid of Honour. But that doesn’t automatically mean he’s completely free from every obligation tied to the deal.
A lot of these contracts work on both delivery and time terms. Meaning even if the albums are done, the partnership itself could still be active for years depending on the agreement. Especially when that much money was invested.
People also forget labels usually include “commercially satisfactory” clauses to stop artists from just dumping music to escape deals. But Drake’s leverage is different. At his level, he probably negotiated more freedom than most artists could ever get.
The bigger conversation here isn’t whether Drake dropped 3 albums to leave the label.
It’s how modern artists have evolved into full businesses. Drake isn’t just an artist anymore he’s a global brand. And labels today don’t just invest in music, they invest in the entire machine around the artist.
That’s why I don’t think this move was random.
I think it was strategic.
