A message from Past R8 Director

VOTE AGAINST CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ON THE IEEE ANNUAL BALLOT

I was Director of Region 8 (Europe, Africa, Middle East) for 1973 and 1974, and am greatly concerned by the implications of the Constitutional Amendment on the IEEE Annual Ballot.
I advise the Institute's worldwide membership to vote AGAINST, and offer the following observations:
IEEE is the greatest electrical/electronic professional society in the world today - achieved by its ideal of trans-nationalism i.e. "the universality of engineering'';
It is volunteer-run and I am deeply concerned at the suggestion that paid-staff be part of any executive-process, except as advisors.
Put briefly I call on the entire membership to vote AGAINST before the deadline of 3 OCT and sum-up my advice by recalling the home-spun:
IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT.

HOW TO INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION? INTRODUCE A GIRL TO PHOTONICS

Fascination mixed with laughter summed up an ‘Introduce a girl to the exciting world of Photonics’ event organised by Photonics Chapter Sweden on 6 October at Acreo Swedish ICT.
The plan for the day was to demonstrate what photonics is about and inspire school-age girls to choose science and technology as a career in future. With the help of 20 volunteers from Acreo, ADOP, KTH and Photonic Sweden, seven interaction stations were set up to show the basics of light propagation, holograms, light polarisation, photoluminescence, white light as a combination of RGB diodes, IR camera and nanostructures.
