“The most straightforward approach is to ask the patient to prepay, but not all patients are willing or able to make a prepayment. A more flexible and secure strategy is to use credit card authorization forms.

Here’s how it works: instead of forcing immediate payment or turning the patient away, the practice collects the patient’s credit card information using an authorization form. This form should clearly state that once the explanation of benefits (EOB) is received—or within a specified period such as 30 days—the practice will charge the card for any balance not covered by insurance. Why do some people have to be difficult? - Dental Insurance Guy

I don’t know about you, but as a dentist, I catch myself focusing on the negative. It is a common human trait, but I believe our education enhances this tendency. Dentists are used to fixing problems, so we are trained to seek out the problems.

I make lunches for my kids every night for the next day, and being kids they often change their mind on what they want to eat. Of course, they never seem to want the same thing. My daughter is easy, she wants food separated so she can put them together on her own (such as the cheese stick in the lunchbox on the right). My son on the other hand tends to be more difficult; he wants his orange peeled and the cheese peeled and melted into his quesadilla.

Now, I could complain about this inconsistency and that it takes a lot longer to make lunches differently. However, what would I really gain from that complaint and focus on the negative side? Instead, I could focus on the positives: my kids eat healthy, these lunches don’t really take that much time to put together, and overall, they are great kids. Congratulations to Dr. Leslie S.T. Fang. Dr. Fang has dedicated much of his medical career to helping dentists keep their patients alive. He has been an invaluable resource to dentists for years, and in recognition of this dedication, he has become the most recent recipient of the P-I Brånemark Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dentistry. The award was created in 2015 to honor the late Prof. Brånemark and to recognize exceptional clinicians who have advanced dentistry for society’s general well-being. Previous recipients include Drs. Myron Nevins, Tiziano Testori, Istvan Urban, Michael Cohen, Jörg-Rudolf Strub, Massimo Simion and Maria Lopez Howell.

Stressors can range from simple irritation about response times and misinformation, to declining reimbursement trends, increasing incidence of claim denials, disallows or audits.
