cream city review /ccr/ is a MKE-based non-profit lit mag devoted to publishing memorable & energetic fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, interviews, reviews, & comics.

◦history◦

cream city review was started in 1975 after Mary Zane Allen, who had been at The Wisconsin Review, decided there should be a similar literary journal operating out of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Allen worked with the student union to establish both the magazine and a reading series. Later, the magazine began operating with the support of UWM’s English Department. Over the yea

rs, cream city review has evolved from an 8″ X 11″, 50 page, Xeroxed zine to the 175-225 page perfect-bound book format that it is today. Although the standards of the magazine have remained high, the appearances have changed dramatically. The shift to glossy, multicolored covers began in the fall of 1989, shortly after Laurie Buman became our art editor. These covers, which become more exciting with every issue, have now become one of our trademarks. Beginning in the spring of 2008, cream city review began publishing comics in each issue. We are continually seeking to explore the relationship between form and content through the writing that we publish and through our iterative redesign of the magazine, from typeface to layout.

After our editors dive into the incredible work of our writing community, we display the issues right outside our office. We get such joy every time we see undergraduates perusing the racks. Our stockpile never lasts very long, the students are hungry for beautiful work!

Well, you know what they say: grad-student-editors plan and God laughs. Our spring issue was unexpectedly and unavoidably delayed but she's here now! And she looks so good.

We do apologize for the wait, and for not communicating better with our community about what was happening.

Contributors and subscribers: your issues have been mailed out! You can also purchase this issue on our website.

You will find your words and art nurtured by a community kept alive by graduate students who have volunteered their time for half a century. You'll find yourself in place that has honored the voices of tremendously great writers and has welcomed in first publications with the same fervor.
