Entertainment community mourns reggae icon Ras Sheehama

By: Josia Shigwedha

The entertainment community has expressed sympathy to the Sheehama family following the passing of local reggae icon Ras Sheehama.
According to the police, the 59-year-old Sheehama died by su***de on Friday morning in Windhoek’s Ludwigsdorf.

Police say no foul play is suspected and next of kin has been informed.

The President of the Rastafarian United Front and G***a Users of Namibia, Brian Jaftha, urged people to reach out to one another during difficult times.
"Things might look good, but a simple greeting will also help. Don't just pass each other in the street. We might smile and so forth, but just asking, how are you means someone can lean on you," said Jaftha.

He added Ras Sheehama spirit will live one, especially through the songs he made.

"Words cannot express really how I feel about the loss of our brother, but I want to offer my condolences to his family, his wife and his children," said Jaftha.

Local Afro Jazz and Traditional artist Erna Chimu recalled their last meeting with Ras Sheehama in June this year during a joint performance. She said his death is deeply painful.

"The last time we spoke was at his last concert at the village. He was telling me he's so shy and nervous, he doesn't want to get on stage. And he was asking me to go to the front so we can at least feel that he's not alone. I was equally laughing at him for that. I know that it's normal for every musician to feel nervous before a show," said Chimu.

She said Ras Sheehama's death feels like losing an older brother.

"He has been there for me since my beginning and encouraging me, even protecting me when we went to China and having so many concerts that I attended that he has been around, " recalled Chimu.

Another artist, Joseph Ailonga, also known as “Jossy Joss,” said Ras Sheehama performed outside the country where others could not and contributed to the local music industry.

"He has done so much for Namibian music and the message to the public is just let's celebrate him, let's not forget him.

The government also gave us the opportunity to be able to celebrate him as a national hero because he is," said Ailonga.

N**O advocates for free uniforms for nurses

By: Selma Taapopi

N**O member of Parliament, Vetaruhe Kandorozu has called for the introduction of free uniforms for nurses.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Kandorozu noted that although nurses' are part of the uniformed service, alongside the police, the Defence Force and the Correctional Services, they are not provided with uniforms.

Kandorozu questioned the minister of health and social services, Esperance Luvindao why nurses are excluded from this benefit, which is extended to other uniformed members.

He pointed out the inconsistency in nurses' uniforms across the country, noting differences in shape, colour, and style.

Kandorozu attributed this to nurses having to source uniforms independently from various tailors or designing their own.
