MIKE GREEN ANNOUNCED AS CREW CHIEF FOR
ELITE MOTORSPORTS TOP FUEL TEAM IN 2026

WYNNEWOOD, Okla. (Oct. 17, 2025) – Elite Motorsports has announced multi-championship crew chief Mike Green will lead their Top Fuel program beginning in the 2026 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series season.

“We had conversations with a handful of potential crew chiefs over the past several weeks, all great options. But, when Mike and I talked after the Dallas event, it felt like a natural fit, for both of us,” said Richard Freeman, owner of Elite Motorsports. “We’re excited to have him on board. He’s a hall of fame caliber crew chief who has proven he’s capable of putting together a program to win championships, that’s what we’re after. He’s known for elevating those around him and we have that same growth mentality here at Elite Motorsports.”

Green will be active in every aspect of building a Top Fuel team around driver Tony Stewart as well as developing an expanded program to license Aaron Stanfield and Erica Enders in 2026. As Elite Motorsports plans to grow for years to come, Green will serve as a cornerstone in Elite’s broader vision to cultivate future leaders in nitro racing.

Green grew up in Sacramento, California and first started working in the professional ranks in 1987 on Darrell Gwynn’s Top Fuel team. He has since tuned a Funny Car for Tommy Johnson Jr., and Top Fuel dragsters for Cory McClenathan, Tony Schumacher (who he won two championships with) and Austin Prock. Most recently, Green has been the crew chief for rising star Justin Ashley at S**G Racing before being let go with two events left in the 2025 NHRA season, leaving Ashley sitting No. 2 in points.

“I’m excited to be joining Elite Motorsports and to help them build their Top Fuel program. With talent like Tony Stewart, Erica Enders and Aaron Stanfield being in the mix, this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. I look forward to being part of Elite and Richard’s vision to grow the sport,” said Green, who led Ashley to four victories in 2025. “I’ve enjoyed working with Justin these past years, he’s a brilliant driver and I’m disappointed I won’t have the opportunity to see him through to the end of the 2025 season. I wish him and the guys all the best of luck, I’ll be rooting for them. Now I’m looking ahead to 2026.”

Green’s tenure as crew chief will begin immediately as Elite Motorsports prepares for the season opening NHRA Gatornationals March 6-8, 2026, at Gainesville Raceway in Florida.

WYNNEWOOD, OK
(Sept 18, 2025)

– It was announced today that, once funded, motorsports icon Tony Stewart will take the wheel of the Elite Motorsports Top Fuel dragster for the 2026 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series season.

Six-time Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders and drag racing phenom Aaron Stanfield will also test and license in the dragster as team owner Richard Freeman looks to further expand Elite Motorsports' footprint in the NHRA.

"Having Tony as our driver, adding another Top Fuel entry, we're taking care of the sport and opening up possibilities, that’s why we’ll have Erica and Aaron get licensed in the car as well. First things first though, we need to get the program funded, but letting everyone know our intentions, that will help,” said Freeman who purchased the Top Fuel operation from Josh Hart earlier this month. “Tony is a great driver, we all know he can drive anything. He’s great for drag racing, not just as a team owner, but behind the wheel. We’re excited that through our marketing alliance with Tony Stewart Racing we’re creating an opportunity for Tony to keep a Top Fuel seat and a chance to race alongside his wife, Leah [Pruett].”

“I said from the very beginning that I was just keeping Leah’s seat warm and that it was hers as soon as she was ready to come back,” Stewart said. “Well, she’s coming back in 2026 and that Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Top Fuel dragster is going to have her name on it, not mine. And as much as I wanted to continue driving, TSR is not in a position to add a second Top Fuel car. But with Richard buying Josh Hart’s team and our recent alliance, I can still work as an owner and a driver to help both our organizations grow.”

The 2026 season will be Stewart’s third behind the wheel of a Top Fuel dragster. The three-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and former IndyCar champion earned the NHRA Rookie of the Year award in 2024 and in 2025 he broke through for the first Top Fuel win of his career at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Stewart now has two Top Fuel victories to his name as well as the 2025 NHRA regular season championship title. With five races left in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship Stewart is second in the points standings, just 18 behind the lead, as he attempts to chase down the 2025 Top Fuel world championship crown.

The 2025 Mission Foods NHRA Drag Racing Series season continues at zMAX Dragway September 19-21 with the NHRA Four-Wide Carolina Nationals, race two of six in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship.

Stewart and Kalitta were involved in an on-track incident in Round 2, when Kalitta had a front wheel malfunction, causing his Top Fuel dragster to cross over into Stewart’s lane, collecting the TSR Dodge//SRT Direct Connection Top Fuel Dragster. Both drivers were checked and released from NHRA’s medical team.
The 40th Annual NHRA Nationals had a sold-out crowd on Saturday for the fourth consecutive year.
Tony Stewart, Driver of the TSR Dodge//SRT Direct Connection Top Fuel Dragster
“This was definitely not the weekend we were looking for. We didn’t want to qualify No. 11 by any means, but during the money run, we had a set of tires that shook for some reason. I knew during the burnout that the car probably wasn’t going to make it down. We had a reasonable run after that on Saturday. We got through first round against Tony Schumacher and lined up against one of the best with Doug (Kalitta) in the second round. I wish I could tell you what happened (during the accident), but what I saw on the video is the only thing I can go off of. It looked like his front wheel failed and he came across into my lane. I’m just glad he’s alright. I was worried about him and he was worried about me. The silver lining is that everyone around us (in points) had problems in the second round. Even though Doug took over the points lead, we’re all close to each other in points heading into Charlotte, so we can rally from there.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the TSR Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Hellcat Funny Car
“It was a really tough weekend for TSR. I’m really glad Tony was okay because it was a nasty lick that he took. We love doing this and going fast, but it’s always good to see your buddy crawl out of the car and see that he’s okay. We’re blessed to do what we do, but sometimes we get so caught up in the adrenaline and winning that we forget how dangerous it is. I got reminded of that today when we exploded as well. The tethers came up and I couldn’t see out to drive the race car. I didn’t know where I was at on the track or where my opponent was. That is a bad feeling. As a driver, you pride yourself on having seat time and being able to get yourself out of bad situations. When you feel like you’re along for the ride, it is a hopeless feeling. I’m glad today’s outcome was what it was and that everyone is okay and Tony has that cute baby (Dominic) to go home to. We’re going to stay over and do some testing tomorrow so we can figure out what’s wrong. We have something going on in the valve train. The crew chiefs (Mike Knudsen and Phil Shuler) are really smart, so they will figure it out. There’s a lot of parts to pick through. With Blake (Alexander) and Cruz (Pedregon) in the Final, it was the best scenario we could have hoped for points-wise. We will keep working hard and see what we can come up with in Charlotte."

Next Up
The next event on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series schedule is the NHRA 4-Wide Carolina Nationals Sept. 19-21 in Charlotte, North Carolina. It marks the second event in the Countdown to the Championship and the fifth-to-last race of the season.
