Wedding Banquet (redux) by Andrew Ahn ❤️ I haven’t written a capsule review in awhile and for this, it’s time to dive back in. This tender, q***r (not “tender q***r” mind you) storytelling is a gift on screen. Behold a respectful and accurate portrait of chosen family- what it means, how we sustain and feed our connections to each other, and how to mend and heal our wounds and our faults when they threaten these bonds. (Yes, this means I sobbed all the way through my 😷 mask) Ahn is such a skilled and gentle director. I don’t know how he does it, but his work reflects a presence with performers, and ability to have patience for the space his actors require. His scenes then allow us to feel so close to the intimacy between these couples and friends, like listening in on a conversation which you may not be supposed to hear. It is moving to see a reflection of q***r chosen family having legitimate value above that other kind of family - a truth I haven’t seen on screen since the films of the 80s and 90s, stories of HIV AIDS. It feels good to see it again in different context and beyond renderings of solely white cis gay men. Loved this film, THE WEDDING BANQUET.
