Heschel came to America in 1940, barely escaping the Holocaust in Europe, and went on to become one of the most influential religious figures of the era. He was friend and mentor to Martin Luther King, Jr, and the entire Civil Rights Movement, an outspoken critic of the war in Vietnam, a leading voice for interfaith unity and a champion for Soviet Jews. Heschel's writings - The Prophets, The Sabbath, God in Search of Man and many others, remain religious classics to this day, studied in seminaries and religious programs around the world.

Journey Films is very excited to announce our next film! REVOLUTION OF THE HEART: The Dorothy Day Story profiles one of the most extraordinary and courageous women in American history. She was co-founder (along with Peter Maurin) of the Catholic Worker Movement that began as a newspaper to expose rampant injustices during the Great Depression. It soon expanded to become a network of houses of hospitality to welcome the poor and destitute. It will air on Public Television beginning in March 2020.
Jean Vanier, the founder of the worldwide L’Arche communities for men and women with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities, died Tuesday in France. He was 90. Jean was the subject of the first documentary film we produced for Journey Films. The film’s title was "The Heart Has Its Reasons", taken from French philosopher Blaise Pascal. In so many ways it perfectly suited Vanier’s work and ministry for he understood well the unlimited possibilities of the human heart. Vanier made his life’s work the creation of small communities where the center of that community is the person with intellectual and physical disabilities. Often those disabilities could be severe. For Vanier, in that person’s weakness and vulnerability - in the pain and anguish they often expressed openly - is the very heart of Christ. Jean Vanier was in his mid-50’s when we traveled to Trosly-Breuil, France, in the early 1980’s to make the film. We spent weeks living with the community. Joining me on the film’s production team to France was Sister Gretchen Dysart, MSC and Paul Gasek. None of us would leave the same. What I remember so clearly about Jean was his candor and willingness to talk about the challenges of living with those who have disabilities. How the pace at L’Arche needed to be vastly different than the rest of the world – a pace where those in greatest need could feel safe and protected. L’Arche is the French word for the Ark, the Biblical symbol of deliverance. When we made the film there were some 60 L’Arche homes worldwide. Today there are nearly 150, a testament to the community’s long-term commitment to be a presence where needed most. Jean Vanier reminds us all of the capacity of human beings to love at the deepest level – to discover in the smile and tears of the weakest among us the very face of God. Martin Doblmeier

Howard Thurman - one of the most important religious figures of the 20th century, became a “spiritual foundation” for the Civil Rights Movement, inspiring many of its leaders including Martin Luther King Jr, Jesse Jackson and Congressman John Lewis. Although he may be best remembered today as the author of the famed “Serenity Prayer,” Reinhold Niebuhr was an outspoken American-born pastor, writer, and political activist.
Last Friday the world lost one of its most articulate and prophetic voices with the passing of author and Nobel Laureate for Peace, Elie Wiesel. For more than six decades he spoke "truth to power" so the world would not forget the unimaginable tragedy of the Holocaust, and he used his public platform to raise awareness about other global injustices. Martin Doblmeier, of Journey Films, had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Wiesel in the film "The Power of Forgiveness" where he shared reflections on his personal story as well as the Jewish perspective on the challenges of forgiveness. Watch below:
