The Triennial covers locations from Kununurra in the north to Albany in the south and culminates in an exhibition at John Curtin Gallery next September.

Fiona speaks about the history of the event and its aims and outcomes for regional arts and artists.

Now open at Rockingham Arts Centre – a collection of works by Sally Stoneman, including sculptures created over the last few years along with a new body of paintings and drawings. A soundscape weaves each element together and acts as an opportunity for the viewer to reflect on their relationship to the environment.

Through the use of found materials several works in Treeson also discuss stories of the past and present including colonisation, environmental fragility, resilience, erosion, and our interconnection and interaction with nature being at the heart of our future.

Heading south for the festive break? Stop in to Bunbury Regional Art Gallery for a four-time treat of shows on show until 15 February:

💡Monument: Ten acclaimed artists to reconsider these legacies and propose works that push the boundaries of possibility, explore impermanence, and the speculative, offering new ways for art to interact with public space.

💡Angry Underwear: In 1988, Tania Ferrier, a young Australian artist, was living in New York, working nights as a bartender in a strip club. After witnessing the sexual assault of a friend and dancer at a club, Ferrier created the 'underwear that bites back'.

💡The Good, Anna Louise Richardson: Major new solo exhibition by artist Anna Louise Richardson, whose practice is centred around rural life, embedded in the experience and drama of everyday reality.

💡Clay on Country: Showcasing the passion for ceramic practice in the central desert region, the exhibition is a diverse and eclectic survey and the first of its kind.

Read the back story on the extraordinary project set to light Albany's coast in what is anticipated to be the largest outdoor light installation on earth. Created by Finnish artist Kari Kola, the light installation will be roughly the size of 1400 full-size soccer fields. Visit the Artist's Chronicle website for the full story.

What's inside?

💡In this edition we feature world-renowned Finnish light artist Kari Kola, whose Australian debut next March is set to illuminate the Albany landscape over three weekends. The monumental project covers 15 kilometres in a logistical challenge of light, towers and power. Kola has previously lit locations such as the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge, as well as castles and mountains. The inspiration for the work is the Menang plant, found only in the Albany region, depicted in green beams to symbolically represent the plant and red beams to represent its roots. It’s worth booking accommodation in Albany ahead of time to catch this light spectacular.

⚓ We cover a fascinating project at the Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle, where artists have been invited to bring fresh perspectives to its rich collection of objects from the doomed Batavia ship.

🏡 Laetitia Wilson reviews Alana Hunt: A Deceptively Simple Need at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, an interesting exploration of settler colonialism and issues around home ownership.

♀ Laetitia also reviews Place Makers at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, with works encouraging conversations around institutional structures and cultural expectations faced by artists who identify as female.

🍂 Annette Peterson spoke to husband and wife creative team Audrey Fernandes-Satar and Arif Satar, whose latest public art project transforms Thornlie Station.

🌼 We chatted to Fiona Sinclair, artistic director of Southern Forest Arts in Northcliffe, the lead organisation behind the third iteration of Western Australia’s Regional Arts Triennial – a chance for the regions to come together with a shared vision and for city audiences to discover the rich creative fabric quietly brewing in our regions.
