Western Australia has lost one of its most valued senior artists in the passing of Hans Arkeveld. As per his wishes there will be no funeral. A life celebration is planned in the next few weeks. Can you help? Bathers Beach/Manjaree precinct artists may well lose their studios under a proposal to council this Wednesday 10 June. If approved, EOI's to take over the studios are expected to start mid 2026 to mid 2027. Artists such as Jenny Dawson and Greg James have developed the building over decades, often at their own cost, as well as building practices which mentor emerging artists and provide meaningful associations with Indigenous artists. The City's proposed vision: Manjaree will be a vibrant, inclusive, creative precinct where First Nations culture, colonial heritage, and contemporary arts and culture connect and thrive together through community-led initiatives supported by the City. What can you do? Contact the City of Fremantle Mayor and councilors to provide feedback before the scheduled meeting.

From the City of Fremantle website:
The J Shed is a historic Fremantle building that was originally built in 1912. It was built on Victoria Quay for the purposes of storage. The building was moved to its current location on Bathers Beach Fremantle in the 1960s by the Fremantle Harbour Trust and has had a variation of purposes since its move, including being a fibreglass work shop until 1988. Today, it's part of the Bathers Beach Art Precinct.

In 1992 the building was repurposed after a restoration completed by the City of Fremantle to be used as the independent semi industrial art studios you see now.

Greg James of Unit 2 and Jenny Dawson of Unit 3 were some of the first artists to start using this shed as art studios and have been here ever since, establishing their own artwork and businesses alongside Jina Lee Arts and Peter Zuvela Photography.
