I own a retail store. Here’s what a lot of makers get wrong about shops.

Stores don’t exist to “support small business.”
They exist to make money. Full stop.

A good retailer wants to carry handmade and small-batch products — but only if they help the store survive.

If your product:
• Is priced wrong for retail
• Needs a long explanation to sell
• Doesn’t move quickly
• Requires constant restocking, customization, or hand-holding

…it’s probably not a good fit for a shop.

Even if it’s beautiful.
Even if your friends love it.
Even if you worked really hard on it.

That’s not personal.
That’s not mean.
That’s business.

Retail shelves are expensive real estate. Every item has to earn its spot.

If you want stores to say yes:
✔ Price for wholesale and profit
✔ Make it easy to understand at a glance
✔ Package it so it sells without you there
✔ Think like a retailer, not a hobbyist

Makers who get this don’t chase stores —
stores chase them.

If this stings a little… good.

Things I believed when I started selling (that were wrong):

• If it’s good quality, it’ll sell
• Lower prices = more customers
• Everyone is my customer
• Being busy means I’m doing well
• People will “get it” if I explain it

Wrong. All of it.

Good quality doesn’t matter if the right people never see it.
Lower prices don’t bring better customers — they bring more headaches.
Not everyone is your customer, and that’s not a failure… it’s a filter.
Being busy can mean you’re just spinning your wheels for free.
And no one is studying your product the way you are — clarity beats explanation every time.

If you’re newer and nodding along — congrats. You’re normal.
Every seller I know learned this the hard way (myself included).

The good news? Once you stop believing these myths, selling gets a whole lot easier… and a lot more profitable.

This page used to sell SVGs. Now it tells the truth.

Plot twist.

This page started with cute little files for crafters. And that chapter was great. But in the years since, I’ve done something way messier and way more educational — I opened and ran a real retail store.

I see what sells. I see what doesn’t. I see why makers burn out.

So this page is growing up.

If you make things and want to actually SELL them (not just be busy), welcome. If you want sugarcoating, this is not your aunt.

Cute ones. Helpful ones. Loved that era.

But since then, I’ve done something most people giving “craft business advice” haven’t done…

I opened and run a real retail store.
With real rent.
Real vendors.
Real numbers.
And real consequences when things don’t sell.

I see what makers THINK sells.
I see what ACTUALLY sells.
I see why some vendors thrive…
And why others burn out, quit, or stay stuck doing shows they secretly hate.
