Islamic Teachings on Controlling Desire.

1. Recognize Desires as a Test from Allah
Allah says in the Quran:
>And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. (Quran 51:56)

- Desires (for food, wealth, intimacy, etc.) are natural, but they must be controlled within Islamic boundaries.
- The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
>"The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever." (Muslim)
- This means a Muslim must restrain unlawful desires while the disbeliever follows them freely.

2. Follow the Halal and Avoid the Haram
- Allah allows permissible (*halal*) enjoyment but forbids excess and *haram*:
"O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors."(Quran 5:87)

- Fulfill desires in lawful ways (e.g., marriage for sexual desires, halal income for wealth).

3. Practice Sabr (Patience) and Taqwa (God-Consciousness)
- Allah commands:
>And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways." (Quran 29:69)

- The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
>Whoever safeguards what is between his jaws (tongue) and what is between his legs (private parts), I guarantee him Paradise. (Bukhari)

How to apply this:
- Fast (*Sawm*) to control hunger and desires (especially recommended fasting on Mondays & Thursdays).
- Lower the gaze to avoid lustful thoughts (Quran 24:30).
- Avoid free mixing (*Ikhtilat*) and inappropriate environments.

4. Increase in Worship & Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr)
- The more you remember Allah, the weaker sinful desires become:
>Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest."(Quran 13:28)

Practical steps:
- Pray *Salah* on time (especially *Fajr* and *Isha*).
- Read Quran daily (even a few verses).
- Make *Istighfar* (seeking forgiveness) to weaken Shaytan’s influence.

5. Dua (Supplication) for Self-Control

- The Prophet (ﷺ) taught:
> **"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I hear, what I see, what I speak, what I think, and from the evil of my soul."** (Abu Dawud)

Powerful Duas:**
- **"Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min munkarat al-akhlaq, wal-a’mal, wal-ahwa’"**
(*"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from evil character, deeds, and desires."*)
- **"Rabbanā lā tuzigh qulūbanā ba’da idh hadaytanā"**
(*"Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us."*) (Quran 3:8)

6. Avoid Triggers & Bad Company**
- The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
> **"A man is upon the religion of his best friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends."** (Abu Dawud)
- Stay away from environments that incite desires (e.g., inappropriate media, gossip circles).

7. Remember Death & the Hereafter (Akhirah)

- The Prophet (ﷺ) advised:
> **"Remember often the destroyer of pleasures: death."** (Tirmidhi)
- Ask yourself: *"Will this desire benefit me on the Day of Judgment?"*

Special Cases: Controlling Sexual Desires**
- For unmarried Muslims:
- **Fast** (as the Prophet ﷺ advised young men).
- **Engage in sports or productive work** to redirect energy.
- **Lower the gaze** and avoid *fitna* (temptation).
- For married Muslims:
- Fulfill desires lawfully with one’s spouse.

**Final Advice**

- **Balance is key:**
Islam does not demand complete suppression of desires but teaches moderation.

- **Repent quickly if you slip:
Allah’s mercy is vast for those who turn back.

- **Seek knowledge:**
The more you learn about Islam, the stronger your willpower becomes.

May Allah (SWT) grant us the strength to control our desires and remain steadfast on His path. Ameen.

The Fundamentals Which Cause Mahabbah (Love) of Allāh (The Lord).

“The reasons which cause mahabbah of Allâh to develop, are ten:

١. Reciting the Qur‘ân, reflecting and understanding its meaning and its intent.

٢. Drawing closer to Allāh – the Most High – through optional deeds, after fulfilling the obligatory duties.

٣. Being continuous in the dhikr (remembrance) of Allāh, with the tongue, the heart and the limbs – under all circumstances. The more constant the dhikr, the more mahabbah develops and intensifies.

٤. Giving precedence to what Allāh loves over personal loves, when being overcome by desires.

٥. Contemplating and deliberating over the Names and Attributes of Allāh.

٦. Recognising and remembering the favours and bounties of Allāh – both the manifest and hidden.

٧. To be humble and submissive before Allāh – and this is the greatest matter.

٨. To be in seclusion reciting the Qur'ān, during that time in which Allāh descends to the lowest heaven (which is the last third of every night), finishing this recitation with seeking Allâh’s forgiveness and repenting to Him.

٩. To sit in the gatherings of true and sincere lovers of Allāh, reaping the fruits of their speech, and not to speak except if there is benefit in it and that you know that such talk will increase you in goodness and that it will benefits others as well.

To stay clear of all those causes which distances the heart from Allāh – the Mighty and Majestic.

So these are the ten reasons which cause the person to develop true love for Allāh and to reach the rank of al-muhabbah, by which he reaches his Beloved.”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, the worst of people is the one with two faces—who comes to these people with one face and to those people with another face.”

– Bukhari

Ibn Uthaymeen said:

“The one who has two faces is a hypocrite (practical hypocrisy) and a deceiver. He approaches one group with praise and apparent loyalty, then goes to their opponents and does the same, seeking personal benefit while sowing discord among people. Such behavior is condemned in Islam because it leads to betrayal and corruption in society. A true believer should be sincere, honest, and steadfast in his dealings with all people.”

Did Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) see Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) on the night of ascension? Sharing for knowledge purpose only. No debates.

Ibn Hajr Said:
There is difference of opinion among the righteous predecessors as to whether the Prophet peace be upon him saw Allah or not. Aisha ra and Ibn Masood ra said He (peace be upon him) did not see Allah.

There are two opinions of Abu Zar ra in this matter, A group said He (peace be upon him) saw Allah, Abdul Razzaq narrated from al Hasan that: He would swear that Muhammad peace be upon him saw his Lord, Ibn Khuzaima Narrated from Urwa bin Zubair that He (peace be upon him) saw his lord, and He would dislike it when it was mentioned against him that Aisha ra negated this opinion. And this is the opinion of all the companions of Ibn Abbas ra, Ka`b Ahbar, Zuhri and his student M`amar and others have same opinion. This is also the saying of al Ashari and his followers,

Then they (those who have the opinion that the Prophet saw Allah) differed, whether He (peace be upon him) saw with his eyes or with his heart? Imam Ahmad has two different sayings in this matter.

I (Ibn Hajr) say: Some narrations from Ibn Abbas are Mutlaq and others are Muqayyad, It is obligatory to mahmool Mutlaq over Muqayyad, It is authentically reported by an-Nasaaee and al Hakim also said its authentic that Ibn Abbas a said: “Are you surprised at friendship of Ibrahim aleh salam [with Allah], The Speech of Musa aleh salam (directly with Allah) and Sight of Muhammad peace be upon him?”

Ibn Khuzaima narrated with the words: Allah chose friendship for Ibraheem , Ibn Ishaq narrated from the rout of Abdullah bin abi Salma that Ibn Umar ra forwarded a question to Ibn Abbas ra that, Did the Prophet peace be upon him saw his Lord? He replied Yes.

It is narrated by Muslim on the authority of Ibn Abbas that the words:
” The heart belied not what he saw” (al-Qur’an, Iiii. 11) and” Certainly he saw Him in another descent” (al-Qur’an, Iiii. 13) imply that he (peace be upon him) saw his Lord twice WITH HIS HEART.”

Ata narrated from Ibn Abbas that He (peace be upon him) saw his Lord with his heart, Ibn Mardwiyah narrated from Ata from Ibn Abbas ra that Prophet peace be upon him DID NOT SAW HIS LORD WITH THE EYES, RATHER HE SAW WITH HIS HEART.

By these narrations we can reconcile the negation of Aisha and acceptance of Ibn Abbas on this issue, Aisha NEGATED THE SEEING OF EYES WHILE IBN ABBAS ACCEPTED THE SEEING WITH HEART….

Ibn Khuzaima narrated with the powerful chain from Anas ra that He (peace be upon him) saw his Lord.

It is narrated by Muslim on the authority of Abu Dharr:
I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): Did you see thy Lord? He said: (He is) Light; how could I see Him?

It is narrated by Ahmad from him that “HE is light”

Ibn Khuzaima Narrated from him: “I saw him with the heart not with the eyes”

This shows the meaning of Abu Dharr when he said “He is Light” that the Light came in between the seeing of eyes,

al Qurtubi said in “al Mufhim” that “we should remain silent on this issue, and said this is the opinion of a group of scholars.” And He said: There is no clear evidence in this matter on both of the sides, and the evidence given by both of the sides which are apparently different than each other can be interpreted. He said: This is not the matter of Amliyaat where we can accept dhanni evidence, rather it is among the aqaid where we need CLEAR evidence.

In “Kitab at Tawheed” Ibn Khuzaima did tarjeeh to the opinion of Ithbaat (i.e. Prophet peace be upon him saw his Lord) and went into details, and said that the narration of Ibn Abbas means that He (peace be upon him) once saw with the heart and second time with the eyes.

Imam Ahmad also accepted this seeing of Allah tala, It is narrated in Kitab as-Sunnah that Maruzi (rah) asked Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (rah): People say that Aisha (ra) used to exclaim that whosoever says the Prophet (Peace be upon him) saw his Lord has attributed a lie to Allah, so how shall this be answered? (Imam Ahmed) replied: From the saying of Prophet (Peace be upon him) [himself] when he said: “رأيت ربي” i.e. I saw my Lord, this will be an answer to Aisha (ra)’s Qawl because the saying of Prophet (Peace be upon him) is far superior than saying of her (i.e. Aisha ra).

But the author of “AL Huda” rejected that Imam Ahmad said: He (peace be upon him) saw Allah with his eyes, He said: Imam Ahmad once said: He saw his Lord, another time Ahmad used the words of Heart. (i.e. Imam Ahmad said The Prophet peace be upon him saw his Lord with the heart not with the eyes). And what some of the later people narrated from him that He peacee be upon him saw with the eyes of head than this is a Tasarruf of the narrator as there are clear text available (against this).

[Fath al Bari, Kitab al-Tafsir, under the hadith no. 4855]

===∆===

In short,

1. Aisha ra, Ibn Masood ra and others said He peace be upon him did not see his Lord with the eyes.

2. Ibn Abbas and his companions said He peace be upon him saw his Lord with his heart. So there is no contradiction here in the saying of Aisha ra and Ibn Abbas ra.

3. Imam Ahmad also said: He peace be upon him saw his Lord with the eyes of heart.

4. al Qurtubi said: We should remain silent on this issue.

5. Ibn Khuzaima said: once He peace be upon him saw with the eyes and other time with the heart.

6. Abu Dhar ra said He peace be upon him saw a Light.

Sahaba would play around and laugh with each other....

1. Abdullah bin Mubarak narrated

From Al Awzai from Bilal bin Sa'd that I saw them doing archery and laughing at each other, and when night fell they would become monks (i.e. engaged in the worship of Allah).

Kitab al Zuhud li Ibn Al Mubarak no. 144, narrators are trustworthy.

2. Abdul Razzaq narrated:

It is reported that ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar – Allāh be pleased with him – was asked:

Did the Companions of Allāh’s Messenger – Allāh’s peace and blessings be upon him – used to laugh? He replied, “Yes, and the īmān (faith) in their hearts was greater than the mountains.”

ʿAbd Al-Razzāq Al-Ṣan’ānī, Al-Muṣannaf 11:327 narrators are trustworthy but Qatada didn't see Ibn Umar. The meaning of narration is saheeh.

3. Imam al Bukhari Narrated:

Bakr ibn Abdullah reported that the Sahaba of Rasool صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, used to throw (peel of) melons at one another. He said, “If it came to the Haqaaiq (the matters which required protection), they would (act like great) men."
:‏
Adab al Mufrad, Book 14, Hadith 266 authenticated by Shaykh Al Albani.

4. Imam Muslim narrated from Jabir b. Samura that he said:

وَكَانُوا يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فَيَأْخُذُونَ فِي أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَيَضْحَكُونَ وَيَتَبَسَّمُ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏

They (I.e Companions) entered into conversation with one another and they talked of the things (that they did during the Days of Ignorance), and they laughed (on their unreasonable and ridiculous acts). Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) smiled only.

5. Umar bin al Khattab vs Ibn Abbas.

Imam Shafiee narrated that Ibn Abbas said:

ربما قال لي عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه : تعال أباقيك في الماء أينا أطول نفسا ونحن محرمون .
Umar bin al Khattab said to me, let's see who from us hold the breath longest in the water and we were in Ihram.

[It is mentioned in الإختيارات الفقهية للإمام الألباني page 238 the chain is authentic]

6. Umar bin al Khattab vs people of the city Asfaan and Ibn Zubair.

Ibn Zubayr said that ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him raced with people at Al-Mukhammas, in ‘Asfaan, and ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him won the race.

Then, the companions raced for the second time, and Ibn Az-Zubayr may Allaah be pleased with him defeated ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him.

[Abdur-Razzaaq may Allaah have mercy upon him narrated al Musannaf 8/468, taken from Jam'e al Ahadeeth al Suyuti no. 29109, it is mentioned in دراسة نقدية في المرويات الواردة في شخصية عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه page 824 that it is saheeh from the rout of Abdur Razzaq]

This morning, Shaykh ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Badr delivered a lecture on the principles of Ahl al-Sunnah in regards to Tawḥīd Ulūhiyyah and Tawḥīd of Allāh's Names & Attributes

He mentioned the following 10 principles:

1. Tawḥīd is the greatest thing – the reason why Allāh created the creation.
2. Tawḥīd should be the first thing in learning, teaching, and Daʿwah.
3. Tawḥīd was the main focus of all the Messengers' Daʿwah.
4. Tawḥīd is the foundation of the tree of Īmān.
5. Tawḥīd is the greatest reason for the forgiveness of sins, and Shirk is the greatest reason for being deprived of forgiveness.
6. Tawheed has 3 categories – Tawḥīd of Allāh's Lordship, Worship and Names & Attributes.
7. Tawḥīd Ulūhiyyah is the meaning of the Kalimah (Lā ilāha illallāh) because Tawḥīd Ulūhiyyah is to single out Allāh in worship.
8. Tawḥīd of Allāh's Names & Attributes is based on negation and affirmation:
Negating all deficiencies from Allāh without rejecting any of His Names & Attributes.
Affirming all His Names & Attributes without Tamthīl (likening them to the creation).
9. The foundation for the explanation of Tawḥīd is the Qurʾān and the Sunnah, not opinions, dreams, intellect, etc.
10. Fruits and blessings of Tawḥīd are innumerable – all good in this life and next is from the fruits of Tawḥīd.

How dangerous is evil eye.

Abu Dharr narrated that Prophet peace be upon him said:
-" إن العين لتولع الرجل بإذن الله حتى يصعد حالقا، ثم يتردى منه".

Verily, the evil eye drives a man, mad by the command of Allah, such that he climbs to a high place and then falls from there."

(5 / 146, silsilah ahadeeth as-saheeha : 889

Ibn Kathir said:

evil eye is truth, brings down the mighty warrior-rider from his horse.

(Tafsir Ibn Kathir under surah Yousuf verse 67)

al Qurtubi said:

How many men are there who went to grave due to evil eye.

(Tafsir al Qurtubi under surah Yousuf verse 67)

When Ibn Sireen called someone black behind his back.

Ibn Sireen (Tabiyee) once said:

ما رأيت الرجل الأسود، ثم قال: أستغفر الله ما أراني إلا قد اغتبت الرجل.

"I didn't see the black man." Then he (relised his mistake and) said, "I seek forgiveness from Allah, for I think I have backbitten the man. (Because he said the person is black)
