The chessboard comes alive once again in Ozamiz City as the 6th Asenso Ozamiz – Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Chess Championship takes center stage this July 11–12, 2026 at the Ozamiz City Gymnasium, bringing together more than 400 local and national chess players for another historic celebration of the sport.
Coinciding with the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Day celebration, the grand chess festival highlights the unity of the city and the province under a shared vision of progress and opportunity. The celebration is led by Mayor Atty. Sam Norman Fuentes, whose continuing and renewed vigor in supporting the Governor’s programs strengthens the realization of the Asenso Ozamiz initiatives.
More than just a tournament, the event reflects the unwavering passion and commitment of Governor Henry S. Oaminal in building a stronger chess community and creating opportunities for players of all levels.
Known for his extraordinary generosity and love for the game, Gov. Oaminal once again makes a historic move by doubling the prize fund, pushing this year’s total incentives to a staggering nearly ₱1 MILLION chess bonanza — one of the biggest rewards ever offered in a chess festival of this scale.
But the Governor’s support does not stop with the winners. In a remarkable gesture of appreciation, all 400+ participating players will receive ₱2,000 each, ensuring that every competitor becomes part of this memorable chess celebration.
From recognizing chess masters through professional fees to empowering grassroots players, Gov. Oaminal continues to prove that his support goes beyond competition — it is about inspiring dreams, nurturing talents, and strengthening the Philippine chess community.
