They found her lying softly in the grass, holding the same pink blooms she once chased across the yard as a playful pup.
Her name was Luna.
For 16 years, she brought warmth back into a life that had forgotten what warmth even felt like.
She was there the day Emma lost her baby.
When Emma came home from the hospital — empty arms, empty heart — it was Luna who curled beside her and refused to move. Not that night. Not the next. Not even when food was placed in front of her.
Luna understood the kind of grief that doesn’t ask for words… only company.
As the years passed, they aged together.
Emma’s auburn hair slowly shifted to silver.
Luna’s bright muzzle faded to gray.
Every evening, they walked the same garden — the one Emma once imagined her daughter playing in.
But instead, it was Luna who filled that space — running through the flowers, sleeping in the shade, bringing life back into a place that once felt empty.
Then one morning, Luna didn’t join Emma outside.
Emma found her lying peacefully in the sunlight, the soft rise and fall of her breath forever stilled.
Between her paws rested the pink wildflowers Emma had tucked onto her collar the day before.

Emma fell beside her, voice breaking as she whispered:
“Thank you for staying. I wouldn’t have survived without you.”
She held Luna the way she once dreamed of holding her baby — with a love that doesn’t end just because a heartbeat does.

And that day, the sun didn’t simply set on a dog.
It set on a soul who had already saved the one who loved her most.
