*Peaceful Coexistence Key to Development in Imo Oil-rich Communities Commissioner*

In a bid to promote peaceful coexistence and development in oil-rich regions of Imo State, the Commissioner for Niger Delta Affairs, Henry Okafor, has advised host communities to shun aggressive approaches in demanding their rights from the government and oil companies. The commissioner made this call while addressing members of the Niger Delta Journalists Association at his office in Owerri.
Okafor emphasized the need for a harmonious relationship between host communities and oil companies to enable even development in those areas. He noted that the oil companies are always ready to meet the needs of the host communities in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), and that the Ministry is committed to ensuring that the oil companies do the needful.
The commissioner attributed the restiveness observed in the areas to the attitude of double standards, avarice, and self-serving on the part of leaders representing the various communities. He urged leaders to discard enmity, corruption, and greed, which he insisted were major problems hindering development, peace, and progress in the communities.
Okafor called on the communities to channel their issues and grievances to the Ministry instead of resorting to violence or armed conflict. He assured that the Ministry is saddled with the mandate of ensuring that oil companies do the needful to their host communities to strengthen peace and development.
As someone from an oil-producing area and former Managing Director of ISOPADEC, Okafor emphasized the government's commitment to the overall welfare of hydrocarbon communities. He noted that Governor Hope Uzodinma's administration has been working tirelessly to ensure that oil and gas conglomerates do the needful to the people.
The commissioner reiterated the Ministry's efforts in pushing oil companies to fulfill their promises to the people, in line with the PIA. He urged the people to be peaceful while pressing home their demands, adding that leaders of host communities should work in one accord to see oil and gas companies do what is right.
Okafor highlighted the significant boost in oil production and revenue in the state, thanks to Governor Uzodinma's efforts in bringing in more oil companies. He expressed optimism that the state's oil and gas sector would continue to thrive with the right approach.
The commissioner took the opportunity to refute allegations of meddling leveled against him by some individuals when he intervened to reconcile issues between one of the communities and an oil company. He maintained that his actions were aimed at promoting peace and development.
He urged the people of oil host communities to work together with the government and oil companies to achieve development and progress. He emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue and cooperation to address issues and grievances, rather than resorting to aggression and violence.
Okafor State that, With the Ministry's commitment to ensuring that oil companies do the needful, and the government's efforts to boost oil production, there is hope for a brighter future for the oil-rich regions of Imo State. The ball is now in the court of the host communities to shun aggression and work towards a harmonious relationship with the oil companies.
