Happy New Year! Let's talk about your fitness goals.
How many miles will you run/walk in 2025?
Goals matter. Start with what you think is reasonable for a week. For an established runner, I always say 20. Since some can certainly be walked, that's less than three a day, totally reasonable. For a beginner, 18. I know, that's almost the same, but the difference is the beginner will be walking half of it.
Typically, an established runner may be doing various races throughout the year, which means building up mileage over weeks and months and then tapering leading up to the race, or maybe due to life and work, some times of year are busier than others, but I find that averaging 18/20 is reasonable.
I'm not saying it's easy.
I get it. It's easy to get busy with life and work, and all of a sudden, three days have gone by without any exercise. If that happens, you have to bump it up to four miles a day - or every other day - until you get caught up.
Even if only walking for fitness, three miles a day is doable.
Consider that time on your feet makes a huge difference in your health.
Standing is healthy. Sitting is not.
Walking is far better than standing, and running at least half the miles, even at the easiest pace, is going to be life-changing, health-changing.
Add one session a week of high intensity intervals, only appropriate after you've been running a while, and bazinga, you'll be a different person at this time next year.

Hey Beginner Runners! I'm back recording podcasts. I've got a couple in the can (ready for release), but I'm wondering about your burning questions. I've got a big surprise coming with the first episode - actually, a couple big surprises, but I want to hear from you, now.
ASK me anything.

There is nothing wrong with baby steps. No, really, the surest path to becoming a runner is to progress slowly and gradually.
In fact, the slower the progression, the greater the likelihood that you will become a lifelong runner, that person who looks forward to running every day.

There is nothing wrong with baby steps, but standing still will get you nowhere.

Becoming a Runner is Not Intuitive

After 15 years of coaching runners, the most critical lesson has been that when people fail, whether due to injury or frustration, it’s not because their bodies can’t handle it. Rather, it’s because they go about it all wrong. They assume they should just run until they can’t run any longer, walk a while, then repeat. That’s a mistake on many levels, and in my Beginner Runner Village Podcast, I explain why. I even have a Quick Start 10-Day series of episodes to give you all the information you need to do it the right way. Yes, and that is totally free as are all the podcast episodes. Go to any podcast player/app and check it out.
