Life is quite different now from when I last interviewed this awesome band. 2019 was my first interview with Hush Money and back then, the beers were flowing! Now, most of us dads, older and much wiser.
I’m so glad the podcast is back because I’m finally getting to catch up with bands I haven’t seen in years (damn you, covid). Unfortunately, several great bands in the Atlanta Rock Scene broke up during Covid. Thankfully, Hush Money was not one of them! Not only did they stay together, they thrived! They used the time to write new material and play any and all gigs they could. I love a band that is smart about music, treating it like a business. This band funds itself. Nothing comes out of their own pockets.
As an independent artist, what you do on stage is only about 20% of what it actually takes to be a successful band. Atlanta Rock Scene....bring back the COMMUNITY!! The scene thrived when that was the focus. Friendly competition. We need to get back to that. I loved Greg’s take on perception of a live show vs. the recorded version of the song. Live shows are an experience. It’s not going to sound exactly like the record. In live shows, bands improvise and that’s the FUN PART! Such an incredible conversation with an intelligent, hilarious band.
You create a scene by making noise, promoting each other, promoting each other’s music. Yet again, I’m still finding out people were at my 30th birthday bash concert at Smith’s Olde Bar 6 years ago. Hush Money was there and I didn’t even know it, haha! Nothing but respect for cover/tribute bands, but we had a great conversation on how that is starving people of original music. Music is creation. Music is art.
