The anti-literacy laws of the 1700s made it explicitly clear that slaves were prohibited from learning how to read and write, and that if any slave should be caught reading or teaching, the offense was punishable by whipping, separation of families through sale, and in some cases, death. Any white man/woman or free slave (Freed man) teaching a slave to read or write would be punished as well. The laws were put into place to keep slaves from obtaining the very freedom that was at their fingertips. Today, we celebrate our ancestors. We are the products of their wildest dreams!
