Nickelodeon has agreed to “commonsense” AI protections for voice actors on animated shows like The Patrick Star Show and Dora the Explorer, according to performers’ union SAG-AFTRA.

The union announced on Wednesday that it had reached a tentative deal with Nickelodeon over voice acting on animated programs for basic cable and Paramount+. With covered projects including Rugrats, The Loud House, Kamp Koral and Rock Paper Scissors, the three-year provisional contract also brings some rate increases, a new premium and faster payment due dates.

The new deal, which has yet to be approved by the union’s national board, includes “commonsense” AI protections, according to a chief negotiator.

The Hollywood Reporter was on-site Tuesday morning when Netflix broke ground on its new East Coast home, Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth in central New Jersey. (Yes, there is a central New Jersey.) The gigantic renovation project — in which Netflix will turn a long-abandoned U.S. Army base into a dozen soundstages, a backlot, state-of-the-art postproduction facilities, general office space and basically 500,000 square feet of all things Netflix — was brought to you by one thing: tax credits.

Ironic, then, that it is the dubbers — or synchronization artists, as they prefer to be known — whose voices have become the loudest in Europe’s battle over the use of artificial intelligence technology in film and television production.
