Diplomatic efforts to ease long-standing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan collapsed this week after the third round of Istanbul talks ended without an agreement. Experts attribute the failure to entrenched positions and “hyper sentiments” prevailing on both sides.
Although a ceasefire along the border remains technically intact, analysts warn that the breakdown could embolden militant groups and risk further destabilizing the region.

The Pakistan military has categorically ruled out any negotiations with the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reaffirming its commitment to continue operations against militant networks.
Speaking to media representatives, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) said that there will be “no talks with the banned organization at any cost.” He added that a nexus exists between warlords, drug producers, and Taliban elements, with narcotics serving as a key source of terror financing in border regions.
The DG ISPR emphasized that dismantling this network is essential for ensuring long-term stability and security in the region.

Pakistan has reiterated that safeguarding the lives of its citizens takes precedence over keeping border crossings open.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Islamabad expects the upcoming October 25 meeting in Istanbul to establish a clear monitoring mechanism to address its security concerns with Afghanistan.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi emphasized that Pakistan does not seek escalation but urged the Taliban authorities in Kabul to uphold their counter-terrorism commitments.
“Pakistan urges the Afghan Taliban authorities to honor their commitment to the international community and address Pakistan's legitimate security concerns by taking verifiable action against terrorist entities, including FAK, TTP, FH, and BLA,” Andrabi said.

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has announced plans to construct a dam on the River, local media reported on Friday. The project, approved by the Taliban’s top leadership, is set to begin immediately.
The Kunar River, which flows into Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has long been a shared water source between the two neighbors. Analysts warn that the new dam project could further strain already fragile relations between Islamabad and Kabul, amid ongoing diplomatic and security tensions.
