“Base-rattlers,” salamanders, and dragnets – all found in the backstory to the latest redistricting efforts in the Lone Star state.

On my latest podcast, I dive into what’s happening in Texas politics and why it matters nationwide.

Plus – how both political parties use this issue to gather support and donations (aka “base-rattling”).

Comment PODCAST and I’ll DM you the links to listen or watch!

Quick FYI before you listen: Redistricting can happen without a state adding new representatives due to population changes! It can simply occur when congressional districts change or shift. In this Texas case, Texas both added seats during the latest census AND wants to redraw existing districts. After I listened to this podcast a few times during edit, I wanted to make sure to emphasize this fact!

“One of the best meteor showers each year.”

NASA describing the Perseids meteor shower, which peak overnight August 12-13. While a bright moon may block some of the view, stargazers under dark skies can still expect to spot about 10–20 meteors per hour.

Best Time To View: You can watch throughout the night, but your best chance comes between midnight and dawn local time.

What’s a Meteor Shower? “As the Earth makes it way around the Sun, it passes through the debris trail left by the comet. These space remnants collide with our atmosphere and disintegrate to create fiery and colorful streaks in the sky.” (NASA)

Why the Name? Meteor showers take their names from the star or constellation closest to their apparent origin - in this case, Perseus. According to NASA, “Every Perseid meteor is a tiny piece of the comet Swift-Tuttle, which swings by the Sun every 135 years.”

“There is still the potential for global trade dynamics in the broader economy to prompt general uncertainty regarding consumer demand in the back half of the year. But we believe we are well positioned to grow.”

Mattel Chief Executive Ynon Kreiz, after the company announced slightly lower earnings expectations for the year due to economic uncertainty.

Why It Matters: The popular toymaker reported an overall drop in sales to retailers and slightly lowered its sales forecast, citing uncertainty over the impact of tariffs. In the latest three-month period, Barbie doll sales dropped 19% year-over-year while “vehicle sales” (think Hot Wheels) increased by 10%.

Despite these lower doll sales, the company remains optimistic: “At the same time, consumer demand has held up better than expected. Kreiz said that the toy industry grew throughout the first half of the year, boosted by both higher volumes and prices. While it is still early, Mattel feels good about the coming holiday season, as internal research shows that shoppers intend to spend the same or more than last year, he added.” (WSJ)

“Sanitation practices in this farm are of particular concern due to the number of cases.”

The Florida Department of Health in a news release on Monday, offering an update on an E. coli and campylobacter bacteria outbreak from improperly-handled raw milk that has affected 21 people, hospitalizing seven of them. The farm connected to the outbreak sells its product in Northeast and Central Florida.

Why It Matters: According to recent data, raw milk sales have increased, though health officials warn it can potentially carry harmful bacteria such as E. coli, campylobacter, listeria or salmonella.

🥛 Raw milk refers to milk that hasn’t undergone pasteurization – a process that heats milk in order to kill harmful bacteria.

🥛 Selling raw milk across state lines is illegal, but raw milk sales within states are subject to local laws.

🥛 In Florida, it is not legal to sell raw milk for human consumption, but it can be sold if companies label it as pet food.

“This is a gamechanger jobs report. The labor market is deteriorating quickly.”

Navy Federal Credit Union chief economist, Heather Long, on the latest jobs report released Friday that showed fewer-than-expected jobs created. Reflecting the rapidly-changing landscape and diversity of economic data, only days earlier Long had commented on another report: “The word of the summer for the economy is ‘resilient.’ The consumer is hanging in there, but still on edge until the trade deals are done.”

Why It Matters: The monthly jobs report shows a snapshot of the labor market. The latest data showed 73,000 jobs created in July — fewer than expected. The report also included “significant downward revision” to previous monthly numbers; revisions happen regularly as more data becomes available. Overall, the picture that emerges from this data shows a significant slowdown in labor market growth.

After the jobs report was released, President Trump fired the person at the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, claiming politics influenced the report: “In my opinion, today’s Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad.” The White House says some of the volatility in the data from the last few weeks comes from uncertainty over tariffs, and says that with new deals in place, the uncertainty should lessen.
