Lila Turanga is the electronic music project of Georgian artist Ruska Datukashvili, blending progressive house, trance, and techno into emotionally charged, narrative-driven sets. With a background in classical piano and a degree in musicology from the Tbilisi State Conservatoire, she transitioned from teaching into Georgia’s dynamic electronic scene.

Her work explores themes of transformation, empowerment, and vulnerability — deeply influenced by motherhood and personal growth. Lila has performed at notable venues and festivals including HÖR Berlin, TRUST FESTIVAL x HÖR, Ezo Festival, KHIDI, Mtkvarze, TES Club, Left Bank, BUDE, Makerspace, Love Bar, and Secret Garden Batumi. Through carefully crafted soundscapes, her music offers space for emotional connection and introspection.

——

Lila Turanga delivers a late-night workout packed with deep, rolling tech house, spacey minimal textures, and bubbling acid rhythms. Her set drips with tension and release — blending stripped-back percussion, off-kilter basslines, and hypnotic breaks that flirt with both the sensual and the strange. Expect high-gloss groove, q***r club energy, and the kind of tracks that keep you moving in the shadows long after last call. This is techno with a body and a bite — built for 3 AM eyes closed, hips loose, sweat-slicked dance floors. Link in bio to stream now.

For August, Around the World heads to the vibrant techno scene of Georgia, a country whose capital, Tbilisi, has become an international beacon for underground electronic music. Against a backdrop of political unrest, conservative social norms, and cultural resistance, Georgia’s techno community has carved out its own sound; raw, emotional, and deeply committed to freedom of expression.

At the center of this sonic uprising stands Bassiani, the now-iconic club located beneath a football stadium, known not only for its world-class programming but for its role in LGBTQ+ and youth activism. After a dramatic police raid in 2018 sparked mass protests dubbed the “Rave Revolution,” Bassiani and its orbit of organizers, dancers, and artists became symbolic of Georgia’s fight for bodily autonomy, q***r rights, and creative freedom.

From then on, a rising network of DIY spaces and q***r-centered collectives sustained the momentum. Crews like LEASH (a q***r techno party series at KHIDI), 303Hz (a local educational platform and artist incubator), and TRUST Festival (co-founded by Mtvare) have played key roles in shaping Georgia’s new wave. These spaces prioritize femme, trans, and q***r voices while pushing sonic boundaries—from experimental trance to percussive techno and breaks-driven sets. Venues like Left Bank, TES, and KHIDI remain vital hubs, but it’s these community-rooted initiatives that continue to redefine what the Georgian underground can be.

Georgian techno often reflects the weight of this lived experience; hypnotic, percussive, at times deeply mournful, but always pulsing with resistance. This is dance music as sanctuary, protest, and catharsis.

This month, we spotlight five artists pushing sound forward from this powerful region:
A.01 – Lila Turanga .turanga_
A.08 – Mtvare .s
A.15 – Tekkon
A.22 – Olly ._______
A.29 – Natuta

Tune in every Friday to OBSKUR RADIO and explore the energy of Georgia’s scene with us.

Kaftan is a multifaceted artist who seeks to surprise, overwhelm, and when appropriate, underwhelm. Her passion for experimental styles goes beyond music, making use of field recordings, spoken word and tracks from around the world to bring a (debatably) complete set together. Since 2020, curation, over DJing, better defines Kaftan, allowing her to explore new possibilities and challenge the boundaries of conventional and linear sonic experiences. Always in flux, rarely in tandem.

Tracklist:
Tresilian Bay - Huw Marc Bennett [Albert’s Favourites]
Para(sol) - Nicolas Jaar, Soul Keita [Greta Cottage Workshop]
The Jam Roll - Alt Control, Yamagucci [Maccabi House]
Disko Axiom - TERR, Daniel Watts [Permanent Vacation]
Jellyfish on Acid - Acid Pauli [Rebellion]
Mermaids On Acid - Sedef Adasi [Public Possession]
Umbriel - Amor Satyr [Boukan Records]
Eteus - not even noticed [HARD AT WORK]
Element - Palace [Hot Haus Recs]
Pygmy Funk - Spyro Gyra [Turbo Recordings]
Untitled 140 - Burland [877 Records]
Se Eu Cantar - 99 GINGER, DJ Danifox [99GINGER Records]
Gypsy Moth - Desert Sound Colony, Guava [Scenic Route]
Blood Moon - Feater [Running Back]
Cutie - Shanti Celeste [Hessle Audio]
The Doldrums - Radioactive Man [Asking For Trouble]
Hide - Ciel [Parallel Minds]
DTF - Addison Groove [Groove]
CHROMA 007 STEALL - Bicep, Hammer [CHROMA]

Kaftan delivers an immersive journey that blurs the lines between leftfield house, UK bass, and hypnotic club experimentations. Moving through lush textures, polyrhythmic percussion, and woozy acid-laced atmospheres. A warm, dubby pulse carries the listener from misty coastal moments to late-night dancefloor haze. With an ear for the unexpected and a deep love for sonic storytelling, Kaftan crafts a narrative that is both emotionally charged and rhythmically infectious.

USHKA is a Sri Lankan-born, Thailand-raised, Brooklyn-based DJ and multidisciplinary artist exploring global club and bass music. She blends diasporic sounds to take listeners on immersive journeys through international rhythms. A staple in NYC nightlife, she co-runs the q***r femme party Caótica and has played at MoMA PS1, Lincoln Center, Boiler Room, NTS, The Lot, The Shed, and more.

“This mix features 10 artists (myself included) of Sinhala, Tamil, or Burgher descent, all tracing roots to the island known as Sri Lanka. I open and close with traditional Sri Lankan drums used in “peraheras,” Buddhist festivals held in Kandy near my mother’s hometown, featuring adorned elephants, dancers, and drummers. The mix weaves Sinhala Kandyan drums, Carnatic arrangements, tabla, and Indian ragas with drum & bass, UKG, Tamil and Telegu remixes, techno, and experimental club.

Featured artists include M.I.A., Goldtooth, Elsz, Surusinghe, Perera Elsewhere, Priya Ragu, IYRE (based in SL), Krithi, and myself. Some of us grew up on the island, some in diaspora. Our island endured a 30-year civil war, with minority Tamil and Muslim communities impacted heavily by Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism. I hold this complex history with care. Through music, we aim to build bridges—sonic gestures of solidarity, healing, and connection among Lanka’s many communities across borders and generations.”

Leaving a festival often means stepping down from a world buzzing with connection, music, and freedom, into a “real world” that can feel quieter and more routine. This contrast can lead to what many call “post-festival blues,” a dip in mood linked to the sudden loss of stimulation and community (Journal of Positive Psychology, 2019).

Psychologists have noted that intense communal events like festivals activate reward systems in the brain, creating emotional highs that can crash once the environment shifts (British Psychological Society, 2018).

Understanding this gap helps us approach reintegration with intention, it’s not a fall, but a bridge back to real life. One study published in Frontiers in Psychology (2020) found that participants of transformational festivals often reported increased personal growth, empathy, and purpose, but only when they intentionally reflected on the experience and found ways to integrate it into their routines. That means the energy, connection, and creativity we tapped into don’t need to be left behind in the dust, they can evolve with us, if we make space for them.
So rest. Nourish your body.

Text your festie fam. Journal the things that lit you up. Let the beat soften into something sustainable. Reintegration isn’t about snapping back, it’s about slowly threading that magic into your every day.

Since 2011, Sunara has performed her honest curations of electronic music on dancefloors in Sri Lanka, Berlin, Norway, the UK, India and Pakistan. With a unique and passionate approach to selection, Sunara started her career playing more ecclectic hip-hop, jazz and funk infused glitchy beats, she has since gravitated to a nuanced and serious blend of often atmospheric and brooding minimal techno with subtle nods to UKG woven into her sets.

Sunara has played alongside Jambutek Recordings at multiple events as well as landed bookings at some of Sri Lanka’s most interesting musical events including the acclaimed Pettah Interchange along with events held at SNAFU Project (Colombo). She has also worked closely with Border Movement in Sri Lanka.

Beyond music, Sunara expresses her creativity as a visual artist and works as a hand poke tattoo artist, bringing the same attention to detail and individuality to her art as she does to her music.

This mix explores the intricate sounds of Sri Lanka’s underground, threading together hypnotic minimal and deep tech with a distinctly regional touch. A subtle yet driving journey curated from the Jambutek catalog and beyond, showcasing rhythmic precision and atmospheric tension.
