Introducing our August cover—Issue #03: The Ford Model A
Arriving in late 1927 as a 1928 model, the Ford Model A replaced the legendary Model T after nearly two decades of production. By then, the automotive world had changed. Drivers wanted more power, stronger brakes, conventional controls, improved comfort and styling that could compete with newer offerings from Chevrolet and other manufacturers.
Under the hood, the Model A featured a 201-cubic-inch four-cylinder engine producing 40 horsepower, roughly twice the output of the 20-horsepower Model T. It also introduced a conventional three-speed manual transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes and a top speed of approximately 60 mph, compared with around 40 mph for its predecessor.
Prices started at $385 for the Roadster, equivalent to approximately $7,400 today. The $495 Coupe and Tudor Sedan translate to roughly $9,600, while the $570 Fordor Sedan would cost around $11,000 in today’s money.
Nearly five million Model As were produced through 1931, carrying Ford out of the Model T era and helping usher the company into the age of the modern automobile.
