In an era where data is abundant, the ability to distill complex information into compelling visuals is more crucial than ever. Visme's latest compilation, The 30 Best Data Visualizations of 2025, showcases how innovative design can transform raw data into impactful stories.

Opinions on the "Best" designs are definitely mixed. I use #6 as an example of bad infographic design in my classes (it's actually from 2020).

Do you agree that these are the "Best" designs of 2025?

In the below article, tries to provide an insightful overview of current infographic design trends. Other than the integration of AI designs, I don't think these are new trends. What design styles do you use for your infographic designs?

Same data. Two visual stories ✈️

This is a powerful reminder of how much visual design choices shape interpretation.

🎯 One is crisp and analytical.
📈 The other feels like a journey.

Think of this as a masterclass in how to choose the right visual form for your message. The data didn’t change—but the experience did.

🔗 Check it out below and let me know which style speaks to you.

How much ink does your data really need?

This insightful read from Frank Elavsky dives into the delicate balance between clarity and creativity in data visualization — and why less can often be more.

Worth a read if you want to sharpen your eye and rethink how you communicate with data.

How much minimalism is too much minimalism? I explore this question and propose the most minimalist, highest scoring data-to-ink ratio on a visualization ever made as a thought piece. Why? Well novices learning to make data visualizations are often taught to avoid ‘chart junk’ and strive towards...

Most of us didn’t take a straight path into data visualization — and that’s actually a superpower.

This great read from Evelina Parrou dives into why a winding career journey can make you better at what you do. From public speaking to UX design, every experience adds to your creative toolkit.

My background is in Engineering, Accounting, Manufacturing Operations, Marketing and Product Development. What's your background, and how did it lead you to data visualization?

Your non-linear career path is actually your secret weapon

Stacked bar charts have long been a staple in data visualization, but they often fall short in clarity and comparability. In a recent collaborative post, Sebastine Amede and Darragh Murray introduce an innovative alternative that addresses these shortcomings. By unstacking the bars and incorporating a grand total bar, this approach enhances readability and allows for more effective comparisons across categories.

This method not only improves data interpretation but also exemplifies how thoughtful design can lead to more insightful visualizations.

The following is a collaborative blog post from Sebastine Amede, Darragh Murray, and me.

While we’re often told certain things are absolute sins in the world of data vizualization, is there room to break the rules? Yes! Brent D***s does a great job of questioning the systems we currently abide by. I don't agree with all of the "DataViz sins" he lists, but what are some hard rules in DataViz that you abide by?

Are there really cardinal sins in data visualization? In data visualization, we’re often told certain things are absolute sins—rules we should never break. But should we always follow them? You’ve probably heard some of these so-called data viz sins: ❌ Never use pie charts. ❌ Avoid dual y-...

Steve Wexler’s latest article shares some context and ideas for how to show both actuals and percentages in DataViz. One without the other can mislead—even with the best intentions.

I recently saw a post on LinkedIn from Salma Sultana. If you don’t already follow Salma I encourage you to do so. Salma covers a lot of ground in her post, citing an example from Scott Berinato’s book Good Charts where Berinato underscores the

Jason did a great job getting Nightingale (both online and in print), the publication arm of the Data Visualization Society off the ground. This recap of it's early origins in 2018 is a must read! I think I joined in 2020. Do you remember when you joined the DVS?

This article will mark my last one as the Editor-in-Chief of Nightingale. Yes, it's time to pass the torch and reveal my master plan!

AI is streamlining our work—but at what cost to creativity?

The Guardian recently published this article questioning whether AI, in its promise to save us time, is instead robbing us of the experiences that shape our creativity. This got me thinking about our work as data visualization designers...

Infographics and visual storytelling aren’t just about presenting numbers—they’re about crafting narratives that make data meaningful. Creating visual stories is an act of learning, thinking, and refining—skills that deepen our understanding of data itself.

I think the key is to use AI for parts of our job that are not meaningful. There’s a popular meme going around that says “I don’t need AI to write poetry for me, I need to do my laundry!” I have a similar view about using AI in data visualization design. I need AI to do the tedious parts like finding or creating the right photo to use in my design instead of me spending time scrolling through stock images or scheduling a custom photo shoot. I want to spend my time on crafting the data visualizations that communicate and make an impact.

AI is a fantastic tool for efficiency, but the moment we let it take over all aspects of creative decision-making, we risk losing what makes data visualization impactful in the first place.

It’s still early days for AI in data visualization design, but how have you started to incorporate AI tools with your own creative process? Let’s discuss below 💭
