As in the US draws to a close, we are thrilled to feature the work of Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006), award-winning author in a genre long dominated by white male writers. Among her many awards, Butler was the first science fiction author to receive a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, paving the way for Jemisin, who received the grant in 2020. That same year, Butler posthumously made it on The New York Times bestseller list, her work resonating with new generations of readers for the issues she explored ahead of her contemporaries— .
