Zenith Bank Women Basketball League: Plateau Rocks, Customs Shine In Savannah Conference


After the opening week of the ongoing Zenith Bank Women National Basketball League qualifiers, Plateau Rocks and the Nigeria Customs stand are dictating the space in the Savannah Conference.
The battle in this qualifying contest organized by the Nigeria Basketball Federation is taking place at the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, where only six teams are on parade instead of the anticipated 16.
Of the six teams however, Plateau Rocks and Customs have been the most outstanding with two wins.
On match Day one, Plateau Rocks fought hard to defeat the Nigeria Army 36-30 just as Customs whipped Air Warriors 73-47.
The second match day saw Customs beating Nasarawa Amazons 90-51 while Plateau Rocks also defeated Air Warriors 66-48.
While Warriors recorded two defeats in the first two games, Nigeria Army Women Basketball Team bounced back to winning ways with a victory over Kada Angels. The match ended 53-43. The Women Army however lost yesterday in the match Day three as they fell 68-53 to Nasarawa Babes.
Kada Angels have also lost two games having suffered a defeat of 37-29 in their first match against the Nasarawa Amazons.
The Air Warriors team also recorded their first win in the series with the 52-22 victory over Kada Angels. The crucial game between Plateau Rocks and the Customs was still ongoing as at the time of this report.
As matches continue today in the Savannah Conference it is important to note that all the six participating teams are automatic qualifiers for the national finals.
The NBBF is expected to officially reveal the date and scope of the Zenith Bank Women Basketball League in the days ahead since the Savannah Conference ends on June 17 in Zaria.

Zenith Bank Tennis Grand Slam Serves Off May 11 At Ikoyi Club

The 2023 Team and Singles Zenith Bank Grand Slam to be hosted by Ikoyi Club 1938 has been scheduled to take place between May 11 and 20.

The annual competition will feature six events namely; Men Singles A, Men Singles B, Ladies Singles, Veteran Singles, Super Veteran Singles and the Team Tournament.

Group managing director of Zenith Bank, Ebenezer Onyeagwu, noted that the competition will further boost bonding and foster better relationships among members, saying it was good to have club members socialize and compete on a regular basis.
He also stated that: "It is also a boost to their physical fitness and we are proud to be part of it,” Onyeagwu said.

According to the captain of the tennis section of the club, Chizoba Onuoha, registration is already ongoing for the tournament
She stated that no less than 80 players are expected to feature in the competition which promises to be highly entertaining and exciting.

“We are getting set for the tournament. Registration is ongoing and we expect a very good event. Our people have been training in the past few weeks for this tournament and we are happy with our sponsors, Zenith Bank,
for always standing by us,” Onuoha said.
The tournament starts Thursday next week at the tennis courts of Ikoyi Club 1938.

Fed Cup: Kano Pillars, Rangers Lock Horns In Round 32

The round of 32 fixtures for 2023 Federation Cup have thrown up sparkling and interesting encounters with former winners of the competition, Rangers International FC of Enugu and Kano Pillars scheduled to lock horns at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch in Package B of Moshood Abiola National Abuja on Wednesday.

Plateau United will square up against either Rivers United or Enyimba Fc of Aba in an all Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) affair, while Might Jet FC of Jos and Gombe United will battle for a place in the round of 16 in Kano.

Edel FC of Anambra will hit Akure once more with a tie with FCT’s Mailantarki Care FC in sight this term. Edel thrashed Kogi United Feeders 4-1 at the same city last week. Mailantarki beat Kogi United 8-7 on penalties to make it to the Round of 32.

In the women’s category Heartland Queens will seek to maintain their Impressive run in the competition with a Round of 16 clash against Lagos sides, Lakeside Queens in Warri on Thursday May 11th while FC Robo Queens will face Royal Queens, among other games.
