Refugee by Alan Gratz (Scholastic) is one of those books that stays with you.
Three kids. Three countries. Three timelines. One unforgettable story.

I picked it up during a middle school book fair, and what hit hardest was Isabel’s story—her family’s journey from Cuba reminded me of my husband’s real escape by boat. That connection made the story even more personal.

All three journeys are emotional and powerful. One story didn’t hit me quite as hard as the others, which is why I gave it 4.5 stars—but I still highly recommend it.

Stitch was adorable and the aliens looked amazing. The music hit the right spots and brought back the nostalgia. But the heart of the original cartoon felt missing. The human side of the story didn’t fully land for me. Still, it’s worth a watch if you love the original.

Watched Straw on Netflix last night and I’m still thinking about it. I haven’t seen a movie hit this hard in years. I went in expecting a typical Tyler Perry film and ended up completely floored. This story was real, raw, and heartbreaking. Taraji P. Henson gave a performance that stays with you. I stayed up past 3am just replaying everything in my head.

This isn’t just a movie. It’s a reflection of what so many people go through in silence. It made me cry, think, and appreciate a good story told with truth and heart.

Highly recommend it. Just don’t forget the tissues. 💔
