Carol Kauffman, “Bill Keck’s apartment,” a common hangout for Allen, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, 2nd Ave, Lower East Side, New York, Fall 1953, two years before she met and soon after married novelist, essayist, screenwriter, Terry Southern (Candy, Dr Strangelove). Her and Terry’s son Nile notes “I think my mom used to say that this was the morning Allen announced he was ‘going to California’.
