New CD from SUB/SHOP out now! This 5-piece DIY band formed in Richmond, Virginia and their second show is tonight at 🥖💀

Comparisons often fall short, but they play post-hardcore that has been described as “DC, 1987”, with a “solid ‘90s post-punk vibe,” while carrying the torch for the cascade of experimental basement noise that has long been synonymous with Richmond. The high-octane vocals are more sung-shouted than screamed, with lyrics that are heartfelt, intelligent, and introspective. The final product is heavy and guitar driven, without being a carbon copy of anything.

The members of SUB/SHOP have been heavily involved in the Richmond underground music scene, playing in quintessential RVA bands such as Stop It!!, Permanent, Flechette, Municipal Waste, Remove, Naked Pictures, Slurry, Memorial, Castle Danger, Bracewar, Goo, Flesh Eating Creeps, Brainworms, Two Funerals, Large Margin, Field Day, Curriculum, and many others.

Majorly fu***ng bummed about closing. It was homebase for many public research events (colloquially known as “shows”) and they were always super supportive of ’s environ-metal experiments. I was off the sauce by the time I started attending Vitus, but it was probably the only bar that I actually enjoyed going to.

“Each of the six entries on “Many Shall Fall” is exceptional and praiseworthy, featuring all of doom-metal’s signature heavy, thick, and sludgy elements; easily recognizable and not-so-recognizable movie samples add flavor to the recipe. Elements of the title song leave the most devastating mark. Overall, it is a record worth mentioning among greats such as Sleep, The Sword, and High on Fire.”

Action Patrol was a monumental influence during my formative years. They were one of the first local punk bands I really got into, though sadly I never saw them live because my parents wouldn’t let me drive to Richmond on a school night. I first heard the “Up And Running” EP via a dubbed cassette tape that got passed around my group of friends. I was immediately obsessed. “The Weak Force” LP was one of the first vinyl records I ever bought after discovering local distro/store Lumberjack. When I started my own distro a couple years later, AP’s “On Patrol” CD was one of the first items I stocked. Essential s**t right here. Bitter Melody Records has done the world a service by remastering/reissuing this discography.
