"A DOCTOR REFUSED TO LEAVE HIS PATIENT EVEN WHEN HE WAS THE ONE IN NEED OF CARE
I came across this story that truly shook me, not because it was dramatic like a movie, but because it felt so real.
Dr. Oguz Basut, a surgeon in Turkey, was performing a delicate surgery on a young woman with a tumor in her salivary glands. The risk was high—the tumor was close to a facial nerve, and one mistake could change her life forever.
But in the middle of the operation, Dr. Basut began to feel unwell. His blood pressure was dropping fast. The reason was food poisoning from the day before, hitting him at the worst possible moment. Most people would have stepped aside and let someone else continue, but he did not.
Instead, he asked his colleagues to place an IV drip into his leg so he could stabilize himself while continuing the surgery. Sitting down, he refused to abandon his patient. Within minutes, his blood pressure began to recover, and he pushed through until the procedure was complete.
A photo of him sitting with the IV in his leg while operating quickly spread across social media. Even the university director praised his courage and dedication.
And what struck me most were his words afterward: “I am not a hero. I just did what any doctor should do.”
