Formed in 1974, British funk act Olympic Runners was initially formed by legendary producer Mike Vernon (Fleetwood Mac, Focus, Dr Feelgood) to back American bluesman Jimmy Dawkins for a session scheduled at Olympic Studios in London, inspiring the group’s name.

A line-up of seasoned session musicians included vocalist George Chandler, drummer Glen LeFleur, Chicagoan guitarist Joe Jammer, bassist DeLisle Harper and vocalist Pete Wingfield (who in 1975 was to enjoy a solo hit single in “Eighteen with a Bullet“).

A triumph on the US R&B Chart, where it reached No. 72, 1974’s debut release ‘Put The Music Where Your Mouth Is’ was particularly well received on dance floors the world over and quickly followed up the same year with ‘Out In Front’.

Through the ensuring decade, Olympic Runners evolved from funk to propagating a broader-based sound suited to the period’s burgeoning disco scene.

Despite its successes, this highly-talented group disbanded during 1979, with most of its players continuing as highly prolific session musicians.

NEW AUDIO RELEASE, coming to the digital market 30 May: Steve Jolliffe – Magical (In Memory of Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese)
https://singsongmusic.com/new-audio-release-steve-jolliffe-magical-in-memory-of-tangerine-dreams-edgar-froese-singsong242/

‘Magical (In Memory of Tangerine Dream’s Edgar Froese)’ was composed, performed and recorded in 2015 by former band member Steve Jolliffe after his colleague’s death.

A beautiful 53-minute ‘requiem for a friend’, it’s a warming and ambient aural experience inspired by a dream the artist had of Froese wandering in Jolliffe’s garden.

Played exclusively by Steve on synthesizers, it shares a similar musical ‘architecture’ to that of his and Edgar Froese’s iconic ensemble. “I see myself primarily not as a composer or musician in the strictest sense but as an environment-maker,” he said in an interview in 1984.

Known as a recording and performing artist as well composer of multiple film scores and forty solo albums, Steve Jolliffe is a British multi-instrumentalist.

He left the band Joint before it morphed into Supertramp to study composition and piano at the prestigious Berlin Konservatorium staying on in Germany to play for a year with TANGERINE DREAM.

He next joined cult progressive blues band Steamhammer, touring and playing on its ‘Mk II’ album as well as co-writing the single “Autumn Song” which topped the French charts.

At Edgar’s request, Steve went back to Tangerine Dream to record on the band’s 11th album, ‘Cyclone’, bringing for the first time the vocals and flute that took the band closer to a progressive rock styling.

He has latterly played with Eat Static, composed film soundtracks, an annual solo album, and – ever the multi-tasking creative – worked as a model-maker on Ridley Scott’s seminal ‘Alien’ movie.

From the off, the band’s output was well-received on the dancefloors of Europe, as well as notably in the US. 1977 saw the band release fourth album ‘Hot to Trot’, a polished up-tempo suite of songs that marked the beginnings of a transition from funk to a broader-based disco sound by the end of the decade.

A bonus track here is the band’s soundtrack to Joan Collins’s steamy and controversial film drama, ‘The Bitch’, critically-panned but one of the most popular films of 1979 at the British box office.

Despite its successes, Olympic Runners disbanded during 1979 with most of its players returning to previous careers as highly prolific session musicians.

NEXT WEEKEND: by public demand, Lindisfarne Live return to the Nantwich Roots Words & Music Festival, Saturday 17 May, following their roof-raising set there in 2023.

LINDISFARNE emerged from Tyneside in the 1970s and quickly carved out a unique place for themselves as one of British rock’s most original bands.

Their pioneering sound, combining acoustic instruments like mandolin and fiddle with their electric blues roots, proved the perfect medium to deliver the catchy, memorable songs provided by the band’s resident writers, Alan Hull and Rod Clements.

Their first hit, the Clements-penned “Meet Me On The Corner”, paved the way for their classic ‘Fog On The Tyne’ to become the UK’s top-selling album of 1972, sending the group into the international stratosphere.

Led by founder-member Rod Clements, the LINDISFARNE live shows today celebrate the band’s entire catalogue, from deep dives to smash hits including “Meet Me On The Corner”, “Run For Home” and “Lady Eleanor”.

Having delivered one of the most popular shows the festival has ever presented, LINDISFARNE is back at Nantwich Roots in 2025. And that’s not all: opening for the band is their old friend and erstwhile workmate Nigel Stonier, a producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose new album ‘Wolf Notes’ will be released on 16 May.

Also performing throughout the festival are stellar acts including Seth Lakeman, Steve Knightley, Ferocious Dog, Huey Morgan (with special guest Oli Ng) and The Threetles.

Lindisfarne Live perform at Nantwich Civic Hall on Saturday 17 May at 7.30pm, as part of the Words & Music Festival 2025. Tickets via the website:

https://singsongmusic.com/new-audio-release-bobby-harrison-solid-silver-singsong226/

London-born singer-songwriter and drummer/vocalist Bobby Harrison’s career dates back to the late 1950s, when he started out as a member of local band The Rockefellas.

From there, Bobby moved on to join Golden Apples Of The Sun and signed to Immediate Records to release single, “Monkey Time” in 1965. More singles followed with Powerpack for CBS in 1966 and 1967, and, backed by jazz giant Ronnie Scott, a debut solo 45 in a cover of “Sonny”.

Harrison was a founder member of British rock group Procol Harum, before leaving to form his first own band Freedom in 1968 with Procol Harum guitarist Ray Royer, recording five well-received albums.

In 1973, Bobby formed SNAFU with future-Whitesnake guitarist Micky Moody, scoring a further three acclaimed releases. He released a solo album in 1975’s ‘Funkist’ and guested on albums by Procol Harum keyboardist Matthew Fisher and UK Nirvana’s Patrick Campbell Lyons.

In the early eighties, Harrison moved to Iceland and released this under-looked album with local jazz funk supergroup Mezzoforte in 1987, in the process turning ‘Solid Silver’ into a local market Top 20 hit.

NEW AUDIO RELEASE, streaming now: Warhorse – Live At Woods đŸ€˜đŸ»
https://singsongmusic.com/new-audio-release-warhorse-live-at-woods-singsong215/

A founding member of Deep Purple, British music veteran Nick Simper left after recording on the band’s first three albums to form hard rock act, Warhorse. Along with Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath and Juicy Lucy, Warhorse settled quickly into the ranks of embryonic cult record label, Vertigo.

Initially counting Rick Wakeman in its ranks, the line-up settled down with Simper (bass), Ged Peck (guitar), Ashley Holt (vocals), Mac Poole (drums) with Frank Wilson replacing Wakeman on keyboards.

Warhorse’s 1970 self-titled debut was well-received and the band became a popular attraction on the live circuit. A return to the studio in 1972 for ‘Red Sea’ with Pete Parks replacing Peck showed musical development and assured direction.

While a bolt from the blue came with the band’s sudden dissolution, the line-up reunited for one night in January 2001 at Woods Club in Borehamwood near London to play a memorable note-perfect set that reached back to the glory days of three decades prior. Recorded for posterity by BBC producer Tony Wood, the tapes have languished – until now, their first ever release in “Live At Woods”.

Warhorse’s albums, copies of original LPs selling for vast sums on the collector market today, have never been out circulation. “Live At Woods” serves to complement them admirably, reviving some of the band’s favourite compositions in an incendiary set that measures Warhorse’s reputation as a devastating live act – at full gallop!

It's not every day you get to have lunch with a Singsong collaborator in a cafĂ© in Tokyo... 🌏

A great time spent catching up with Morgan Fisher in Japan, his home of many decades. A composer and keyboard wizard with almost 60 years in the music business banked, Morgan has played with everyone from Mott the Hoople, Mott and British Lions as a band member to Queen during their 1982 tour, the first time they added an additional musician to their live shows. As you can imagine, it was not a dull lunch.

https://singsongmusic.com/new-audio-release-neil-ardley-kaleidoscope-of-rainbows-live-in-london-1975-singsong101/

Kaleidoscope of Rainbows: Live in London 1975 marks a performance of a key composition in the career of one of modern British jazz’s principal auteurs. Released in 1976, the studio version of jazz pioneer Neil Ardley’s epic is regarded by many as marking his creative peak.

Exploring variations on a five-note scale used in Balinese music, its patchwork of swirling, interlocking sound – reminiscent of Terry Riley’s work and Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’ – is consistently absorbing with multiple textures and fine solo performances.

A star line-up of performers include members of Ian Carr’s band Nucleus with Barbara Thompson, Tony Coe and Brian Smith on reeds, Trevor Tomkins on percussion, Dave McRae on keys and Paul Buckmaster on amplified cello under the direction of the composer.

The studio album’s genesis lies in a live tour of the work culminating in this vibrant and exciting performance by the same line-up at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on October 25th the previous year. And while, due to technical issues on the night, “Rainbow 3” is incomplete, ‘Kaleidoscope of Rainbows – Live in London 1975’ includes two “Rainbows” not included on the single LP studio album.

Sounds for a sunny afternoon in March. Stream it now: https://soundraiser.io/link/neil-ardley-kaleidoscope-of-rainbows--live-in-london-1975
