If you’ve ever struggled with insomnia, you might be familiar with the anxiety that being awake in the middle of the night can cause. As you toss and turn, you’re watching the clock and thinking of all the things you have to do the following day. To make matters worse, thoughts can seem irrational in the early hours and worries are often magnified. There is, however, good reason for this – the human brain works differently at night. Knowing and understanding this might, for some, help to address any self-criticism and negativity around insomnia. It might also offer a way to harness that nighttime wakefulness in a positive way. It’s important to remember that there are different ways to make peace with insomnia and perhaps even discover joy in the night.
