Fractious Friday Flashback: In the lexicon of Rock and Roll and the genres important firsts, many musical scholars have pointed to, albeit hotly debated, Rocket 88, under the guise of Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats as the first Rock and Roll record. However, the artist is actually Ike Turner and his Kings Of Rhythm, with Brenston on lead vocals. Recorded at the fledgling Sun Studios in Memphis by Sam Phillips and leased to legendary Chess Records in Chicago, it would give Chess it's first #1 record in 1951, So many musical foundation building names involved on this one. Although there are other songs that could lay claim to being that first Rock and Roll Record, Rocket 88 is one of the best. It's story. Your thoughts?

There are a handful of songs that can be credited for moving the needle on rock music. The 1951 single, "Rocket 88," is one of 'em as Kit O'Toole explains.

As the 50th anniversary of Woodstock is rapidly approaching, we here at the Vinyl Radio World Headquarters are reminded to take note that 2 of the biggest groups to appear on the bill weren't included in the original film. In John Fogerty's look back, seems that there was no love lost between the 2 legendary Bay Area acts. Nice piece from our friends at Culture Sonar.

Creedence Clearwater Revival was supposed to be a top headliner at Woodstock. So what happened?

Released half a century ago just last month, a piece by noted rock critic Robert Christgau from the pages of The Village Voice discusses the synergistic parallel between the film Easy Rider and the music contained within the movie. Did you see the film? The piece itself turns 50 this Wednesday, Well worth your time.

The scene takes place at a small airport and involves a silent transaction in which Spector buys an enormous quantity of dope from our two cycling heroes — some white powder that can be s...
