Liminal is honoured to receive the Special Award, offered to a literary work not covered by the existing categories of the NSW Literary Awards, in recognition of an exceptional contribution to the literary life of Australia. Our founding editor, flew up to the last week to accept the award on behalf of Liminal. As she stated in her acceptance speech: in a time when projects like Liminal are being swiftly dismantled and attacked disingenuously overseas, it feels quite lucky to have Liminal recognised for the last eight years of our work.

Our profound thanks to the artists, writers, producers, arts workers, editors and more, who have worked with us over the years, and who have been so generous with their talent and their time. This award is yours, too. ♥️

“That constant replacement of the immediate past with ‘the new’ is a dissociative tendency—a psychological condition that negates empathy or melancholic mood states. Modernism and settler-colonialism both engage in similar dissociative practices—it’s conceptual territorialisation.” speaks to Liminal about The History Projects, out this month with

Michelle de Kretser speaks with Roanna Gonsalves about hyperrealism, necessary sentences and Virginia Woolf.

“I don’t have the nerve to go back through the novel to examine its sentences; it would feel too close to being confronted with past crimes.”

LIMINAL magazine

LIMINAL is space for the exploration of the Asian-Australian experience. Since 2017, we have published over 100 interviews and portraits of Asian-Australians, raising the bar for diverse representation in the arts.

Liminal is created on the stolen lands belonging to the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respect to their elders, past, present and future, and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and colonial violence continues here to this day.
