Hunter's Dog House I started this page almost 10 years ago to document the adventures and misadventures of a smart, handsome and quirky golden boy. It just fit. and M.A. Why? He did.

Our story began on a sunny April morning back in 2007 when I welcomed this sweet, lovable and sleepy puppy home. I named him Hunter after a favorite WWE Superstar, Triple H (aka Hunter Hearst Helmsley). Yes, WWE is a guilty pleasure of mine…do not judge. Anyway, he just looked like a Hunter Hearst Helmsley. The same golden hair and aristocratic air. His puppy antics made me laugh. His inquisitive

nature and quick brain inspired me to study dog training and dog behavior. His comforting warmth and gentle snores as he slept at my feet while I worked brought me peace. His sheer terror during thunderstorms and at fireworks worried me. His ability to overcome challenges amazed me. His loyalty and unquestioning devotion humbled me. I thought our story would end on a dreary October morning of that same year when we received the diagnosis: Hunter had bilateral canine hip dysplasia. Such terrible news to hear about an 8-month old puppy just beginning his journey. I thought he was going to be a cripple for the rest of his life. However, with the guidance of his very capable vet, Dr. Pedrito Peralta, we were able to keep him mobile and pain-free through non-surgical management. We were able to continue and build on our story and filled it with lots of adventures in a span of a decade: we went on road trips, stayed in fancy hotels and resorts, camped out in the forest, hiked up a mountain, swam at many beaches, competed in sports events, won medals, performed on stage, raced in doggie marathons, got chased by goats, and best of all lazed around all day and veg’d out and cuddled on the sofa while watching TV. I knew this puppy was capable of so much more despite his disability. With the help of our training mentors at BetterDog, we were able to bring out the very best version of him. Hunter became the first dog to pass both B.A. with Honors of the APDT Canine Life and Social Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) program back in 2013. He also became the first Trick Dog Champion from the Philippines as certified by Do More With Your Dog, the global sanctioning body for the sport of Dog Tricks in 2015. His fearlessness even earned him a Dock Diving trophy the first year it was introduced at the PetExpress Pawlympics. His 3-ft jump was good enough for gold that year. Because none of the other dogs jumped off that scary dock. With GUSTO. In 2013, we also fulfilled our dream of being able to share his special brand of loving when he was accepted into the Dr. Dog program of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society as an animal-assisted therapy partner. And, yes, the handsome boy even did some modelling jobs on the side, appearing in some TV commercials and billboards. His resume read better than most peoples’ did. As all good stories go, it does come to an end at some point. In our case, it came sooner than expected. Fate rudely took him from me on the first of August 2016. We were just having a fun day out when he suddenly collapsed: an undiagnosed tumor in his spleen ruptured. In a blink of an eye, my brilliant boy was gone. He was my heart dog and he took a big chunk of it with him when he left. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten. Never ever. But just like that, before I knew it, a new story has begun. New dogs have come into my life and their new stories are being written still. One of the biggest lessons a good dog like Hunter has taught me is that the heart has infinite capacity to expand and make room for loving new loves. Loving a heart dog and losing him does not mean that your heart dies. The heart just unfurls to make more room to embrace these new wonderful dogs to love. If not, I would have missed out on the stories that are now being written by India and Ryder. India is my little black firecracker of a cocker spaniel. She’s turning out to be an amazing little agility speedster and she’s a Trick Dog Champion in her own right. She has also continued the legacy of her Kuya Dr. Hunter by becoming a Dr. Dog as well. In our downtime, she’s the perfect companion: ever loyal, loves cuddles and play, but content to curl up at my feet if I’m busy working. Ryder is our resident goofy golden floofball. We are still exploring all the talents lurking under the golden fluff and we can’t wait to see them blossom in time. We will be patient. He’s a sweet and extremely affectionate (and needy) boy who thrives on attention, and hugs, and kisses, and scratchies, and more hugs, and more kisses, and belly rubs, and attention. Did I mention he loves attention? He loves attention. So there. That’s our story. We hope that you enjoyed visiting our page and loving Hunter and his adventure and we hope that you will continue to be a part now of India and Ryder’s little adventures and misadventures as they are written.

Thank you Cinema for creating this Superman: Bring Your Own Krypto event where well-mannered dogs can accompany their hoomans to watch the new Superman movie! This is a bucket list for us and we’re so happy we finally got our tickets! India gets to watch for free but had to pay extra for the big boy (not a problem though). Three hoomans will be watching and we were given 5 seats total to ensure there’s enough space for both floofs and the next fur family who will be watching beside us. (Tip: the tickets are running out fast so hurry up and head to 3/F of BHS Central Square Mall to get yours if you want to join.)

This comes as a full-circle moment for Ryder. We shot the BGC Valentine’s promo at the BHS Cinema way back in 2020. BGC Central Square didn’t allow big dogs inside back then and we had to get a special permit so Ryder could do the shoot. I was thinking to myself that it was false advertising 😅 since on any given day Ryder wouldn’t have been allowed inside. But here we are now and Ryder can come inside the mall AND watch a movie!

NO TO THE PROPOSED REVISED ANIMAL
WELFARE ACT!!!!

It is ten steps back rather than a step forward in our fight for granting greater protection to the animals and punishing those guilty of animal cruelty and animal neglect. When you add exclusions and ultra-specific definitions, you give space to animal abusers to bend the law to evade liability.

The principal sponsors of Senate Bill 2975 are Senators RAFFY TULFO, GRACE POE, NANCY BINAY, JOEL VILLANUEVA, CYNTHIA VILLAR, MARK VILLAR, and PIA CAYETANO. Petition your lawmakers that the current draft of the revised Animal Welfare Act is a badly written law that should not be passed. These lawmakers have ignored the recommendations of principal stakeholders like PAWS and PVMA. Are they being lobbied by those whom the original animal welfare act intended to prosecute like commercial dog meat traders and those engaged in bloody sports of animal fighting? I can’t believe an animal welfare advocate is counseling them on this bill that is largely BS for animal welfare.

Help us Kiko Pangilinan Bam Aquino and Senator Risa Hontiveros. This bill as it is currently written should not be passed into law.

ANIMALS DESERVE BETTER. THE PROPOSED REVISED ANIMAL WELFARE BILL WEAKENS, NOT STRENGTHENS, PROTECTIONS FOR ANIMALS.

PAWS expresses serious and urgent concern over Senate Bill 2975, which revises the Animal Welfare Act. Despite being presented as a step forward, the bill in its current form significantly weakens legal protections for animals and undermines many hard-won gains as well as risks rolling back years of progress in animal welfare in the Philippines.

We cannot call this proposed Animal Welfare Act an improvement at its current state, as it is not yet the version of the law that the animals deserve. They deserve stronger, more inclusive protections, and we owe it to them to take the time, care, and courage to get this right.

1. Dangerous Redefinition of “Animals”

The proposed bill redefines “animals” to include only “domesticated vertebrate and invertebrate species under the control of man.” This narrow definition excludes wild animals and domesticated non-mammalian species, stripping them of legal protection. Under this proposed law, acts of cruelty against wildlife (e.g. our dolphins, whalesharks, eagles, and tarsiers), or even pets like birds and reptiles, may no longer be punishable or considered cruelty. This limitation is a significant step backward, especially since the existing Animal Welfare Act already extends protection to all animals, without discrimination. Animal welfare should never depend on whether a species is rare, exotic, common, or domesticated. Humane treatment must be a right for all animals—not a privilege reserved for a select few.

2. Loophole in Dog Meat Prohibition

The proposed bill requalifies the prohibition on the dog meat trade by restricting it to “commercial dog meat trade.” This creates a dangerous loophole that allows individuals to claim that killing dogs for personal consumption is “non-commercial” and thus not prohibited. This weakening of protection is especially detrimental to our beloved Aspins, who already face challenges of neglect and abuse. The law must send a clear and unequivocal message: no form of dog slaughter is acceptable, whether commercial purposes or not. This proposed qualifier opens a very dangerous loophole for animal abusers and puts our Aspins at further risk.

3. Gives Legal Pathway for Animal Fighting

The proposed bill redefines the prohibition on animal fighting by inserting the phrase “not authorized or regulated by law.” This creates the alarming possibility that animal fighting could be made legal or allowed through local ordinances, as long as it is “regulated.” This not only normalizes animal fighting such as horsefighting, but will also make them more difficult to prosecute, as compared to the present Animal Welfare Act.

4. Weaker Penalties for Animal Cruelty

Contrary to expectations, the bill does not actually propose any higher or harsher penalties for animal cruelty. In fact, it sets lower minimum fines and prison terms than those already established in the current law by imposing a catch-all penalty of just P5,000 and one year imprisonment for acts not specified in letters a to d of the section of penalties. When the current law already mandates up to P250,000 and three years, this proposed bill even risks minimizing the gravity of animal cruelty crimes.

5. Removal of Automatic Maximum Penalty for Convicted Public Officers or Employees

Another deeply troubling change is the removal of automatic maximum penalties for public officers and government pound administrators found guilty of cruelty. Under the current law, these individuals are held to the highest standard and must face the harshest penalties if found guilty of animal cruelty, rightfully so as they are those the people have entrusted with protecting animal welfare. The new bill, however, strikes this out and excludes them from automatic maximum penalties while retaining them for foreign nationals and juridical persons. This selective enforcement sends the wrong message and undermines public trust. We cannot be making the law more lax towards those who have the responsibility to protect animals themselves.

6. A De Facto Repeal of the Animal Welfare Act

What is really at stake here? This isn’t just a simple amendment—it’s effectively a total repeal of our existing Animal Welfare Act. If passed as written, all the current rules that protect animals (the IRRs) would be wiped out with no clear plan to replace them.

Worse, the Senate version doesn’t even provide for a new set of rules. This creates a dangerous legal gap that could put hundreds of animal cruelty cases at risk. Offenders may walk free, and past violations could go unpunished, all because of technical loopholes in the law.

This bill could become a get-out-of-jail-free card for those who abuse and harm animals — and would undo years of hard-fought progress in animal protection. We must not allow that to happen.

While we acknowledge the good intentions behind this legislative effort and recognize the lawmakers who have taken the initiative to revise the law, this bill, at its current state, is NOT what the animals need or deserve. Some of these concerns have already been raised before by Senator Risa Hontiveros and other stakeholders, but they were yet to be addressed or revised before the bill passed its third reading in the Senate just today.

We urge Congress to carefully reconsider the effects and implications of the proposed bill and defer the passage of Senate Bill 2975 at its current state. This bill must be revisited, reexamined, and revised through wide consultation with more concerned animal welfare experts, veterinarians, advocacy groups, and the broader public.

We call on lawmakers to enact a law that truly strengthens animal protection, closes legal loopholes, raises penalties for cruelty, holds public servants accountable, and, most importantly, treats ALL animals as deserving of compassion, dignity, and respect.

Let us not move backward in the protection of the voiceless. Let us be their voice.

Let us do better for them and give them the law they actually deserve.

Happy National Therapy Animal Day to all the hardworking therapy dogs! 💜💜💜

I have been blessed to have three of my dogs accepted into the Doctor Dog therapy dog program starting with Hunter in 2014 and now India and Ryder. All 3 of my dogs have brought and continue to bring me immense joy and happiness and now they are bringing the same love, joy and happiness to the different people we have met during our Doctor Dog sessions. The value of therapy dogs has long been recognized in other countries and we are happy that PAWS has partnered with DSWD last year to bring structured animal assisted therapy work to the DSWD facilities so that our therapy dogs are able to fulfill their mission of bringing furry love and light to those who need it most. I only pray for continued health for my dogs and the other Dr. Dogs so that they can continue this work for a long time.

This is a perfect representation of how we feel about our brief stay at Sabangan Beach Resort - Laiya. Meh at best. 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

Backstory: We were already booked for an overnight stay at Acuaverde for 27-28 April since March for the yearly beach birthday of the April golden babies Ryder, Tweetie and Poppy 🌈 . I decided last-minute to extend our stay up to the 30th. Of course, as expected given its popularity, Acuaverde was fully booked. So we shopped around for other pet-friendly resorts in the area. The chow chow people always sing high praises for Sabangan (because chows are among the breeds banned at Acuaverde 🤐) so we decided to give it a go. Messaged them and they confirmed they had rooms available for 28-29 April. I paid the dp (which included a 1k pet fee) and prayed for the best.

On arrival: The resort was deserted when we arrived. No cars in parking lot and no guests on premises. Then reception informed us — oh by the way, we have corporate guests arriving later who will have their company outing and who will be occupying the rest of the resort. Why wasn’t I informed that there was a company outing so I could make the choice to proceed with the booking or not? Knowing how it is with our own company outings, I can guarantee 100% it can get rowdy especially when the company thinks that they have the resort to themselves not knowing the resort accepted a last-minute booking from 1 guest (us) to make additional money on the unused rooms. As in: we were the only non-company guest at the resort. But what else can we do? We were already there. They assured us that the noise will be tolerable and in no case will it be allowed to continue past 10pm. So, did that happen? No. The group was noisy until almost 2am.

The pros:
-The resort itself was picturesque. Lots of shade trees and cobbled paths to walk on.
- They had a nice pool for the hoomans (dogs not allowed, of course).
- Our room was pretty. The beds were comfortable and the pillows decent.
-The bathroom was spacious and well-lit (we’ve always complained to Acuaverde how poorly lit the bathrooms are in Casa Marina and Casa Montana and they said they will be addressing them with the ongoing renovations). Sad to say, that’s about the end of the pros part of our stay.

On to the cons:
-The staff were not rude but were not particularly welcoming either. Or maybe I’ve gotten spoiled with the big smiles from the Acuaverde staff who always make their guests feel special. The resort staff seem to be dragging their feet to accommodate even a simple request like carrying our bags because they had no bellboy cart. They also left the bags outside the room. We had to bring them all inside by ourselves. There were no shelves or a cabinet to put stuff.
- The food was…meh. Not bad but not particularly good either. They offer buffet merienda, dinner and breakfast with your stay. But there wasn’t a huge selection and not much room for adjustment for personal tastes and preferences. Like the champorado at breakfast, for example. I asked for some milk because I like mine milky. They said they had none and anyway milk was already included. Ok. So, basically, this is what we have - take it or leave it. We don’t care whether you’re happy with it or not. Dogs are not allowed in the dining area, by the way, so we left them in the room. Even seating was made to be an issue. They wanted to seat us at the back of the dining area which was dark to prioritize the company guests. I objected so they sat us up front. I don’t care that they made us feel like we’re intruders.
- The beachfront was narrow.
- They just had 4 basic bamboo loungers with the nipa roof for you to lounge on.
- The worst part was that the lifeguard was nowhere to be found. I had to ask for him to be paged because we had questions about the kayak (no, it’s not included and you need to pay to use). After that interaction, off he went again. Went swimming this morning, he still was nowhere to be found. He put the red flag up (meaning swimming conditions dangerous) and just let it be. Acuatico was right next door and they had green flag up because the waves were pretty calm this morning. So basically, swim at your peril since the red flag was up. Pretty sure this is not compliant with San Juan LGU requirements for resorts. When I asked, they said he was also their maintenance guy and he was occupied with repairs. Ok. Got it. Guest safety is low priority. Noted. I had to keep an eye on our stuff because no one else would. At Acuaverde, there are guards to make sure your stuff is safe while swimming and having fun.

I don’t expect VIP treatment. But if they can’t be bothered to be especially welcoming to a first-time guest, then for sure this was a first and last for us. 🙅🏻‍♀️ I said, if I liked it, I would extend up to the 30th. Nope. We left at checkout. We would rather spend our hard-earned money on a resort that truly makes us feel welcome so we would want to return time and again. By the way? Their rates are not far from Acuaverde’s but you definitely get a lot more bang for your buck at the latter especially with the amenities for both humans and pets as part of standard offering.

PAWS is down to its last 3 vials of injectable general anesthesia, essential for life-saving animal surgeries like amputations and vital spay/neuter (kapon) procedures.

The situation is urgent as we’ve already contacted the national supplier and distributor, but they have informed us that there is currently zero stock available in the country.

We have also reached out to other organizations that provide low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries but they, too, are at a loss on where to source these supplies and may have to suspend their clinic operations soon.

While PAWS has already directly written to the drug company requesting the expedited importation of the anesthetic for compassionate use to help address the escalating problem of pet overpopulation and rabies in the country, we are now turning to posting this public appeal.

We urgently need help from anyone who can provide an immediate, legal supply of the injectable veterinary anesthetic so we can continue our clinic operations.

We tried to do the demo with Ryder so he’s more visible but he’s too heavy for the table and we feared it would collapse. 😅 Anyway, it’s India’s time to shine. This is her forte after all — staying still and looking regal for demos.
😍😍😍

On a serious note:

I dealt with a thunder and fireworks-phobic dog for almost a decade. Hunter was extremely fearful of loud noises. He would be so miserable, shivering, and cowering in fear at the mere hint of thunder or fireworks. He would often panic to find a hiding place. He had gotten stuck in difficult places before because of his need to hide. There is no “training” for phobia. It’s irrational. We have, however, learned about some training and management tools and techniques to help keep him calm and minimize his anxiety as best we can such as:

- taking long walks before the fireworks started so he’s already tired by the time NYE rolls around
- playing training games where his drive and focus was engaged and where he got rewarded with jackpot treats (think…lechon)
- using commercial calming aids like the Thundershirt and calming caps and DAP sprays and Rescue Remedy
- providing him a “den” underneath my desk and then dimming the lights, turning the a/c on full blast and turning on calming music for dogs

The fear never went away. It got better to some degree, but he was always afraid of thunder and fireworks until he passed. I didn’t get to join the family for media noche for 10 NYE celebrations because keeping Hunter calm and comforted was my priority. I don’t regret a single thing.

I thank the universe that Ryder isn’t scared of thunder or fireworks at all. India, however, is scared of thunder and fireworks but to a different degree compared to Hunter. Where Hunter’s response was flight (to run and hide), India’s response is fight. She would be barking at the thunder or fireworks ALL. NIGHT. LONG. She is stressed during NYE. So, I still utilize the tools and techniques I learned for Hunter to help India. Fear is still fear.
