Royal FLUSH or Royal BUST?!
(Spoiler: it's definitely not a bust)

Review: Watershed Bourbon Single Barrel Select: Ace of Hearts
MSRP: $59.99
Category: Single Barrel Bourbon
Proof: 130

Notes: Strong Oaky Vanilla, Cinnamon, brown sugar, a touch of dark fruit

Pros: A huge amount of flavor and body which masks some of the high octane burn. Not much bitterness or harshness

Cons: Not too much uniqueness outside of the barrel forward notes

Summary: This is one that you are going to love or hate - if you are newer to bourbon and don't like high proof flavor-bombs, this may not be for you. That being said, this is 100% flavor bomb. There may not be many unique notes, but the sweet and spicy oak notes that are there are REALLY there.

The Subjective Take: I don't know if it was the mood I was in, my love for Ohio distillers, or if it's truly just the whiskey, but I was blown away by this bottle. My only critique is that when it comes to barrel picks, I tend to like something a bit more unique, BUT this was literally so tasty that I am willing to look the other way. This bottle doesn't do too much; instead, it chooses to do barrel forward sweet and spicy... and it does it REALLY well. If you like the bottles that I typically call "flavor bombs", this is a no brainer at $60. Dear Watershed and OHLQ: Bravo.

New-Lu who dis?

Review: Hazelbaker Bottled In Bond
MSRP: $59.99
Category: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Proof: 100

Notes: Oak, Cinnamon, Brown Sugar, Sour Cherries, Spice

Pros: Nice depth of flavor, good body, the nose is different from the palate

Cons: Bitterness on the finish, slightly more burn than I'd expect at 100 proof

Summary: This bourbon, brought to you by yhe same folks as Nulu (Prohibition Craft Spirits) has that classic bourbon taste to it, with a couple extra notes thrown in, like sour cherry and cinnamon. It has a decent complexity with the nose being different from the palate, and a good amount of different notes going on with each sip. Some sips you taste more of the barrel influence, others you get more of the light sweetness.

The Subjective Take: This is a tasty pour. If I was handed a glass of this at a friends house or a bar, I would really enjoy it. I was having a hard time placing it in terms of price, so I tried a few more side by side with it, and some of them I liked more, some I liked less... which basically means all in all, I think it's a fair buy for the money. It's not the steal of the century, but it's also not overpriced

Review: Westward Whiskey Pinot Noir Cask
MSRP: $89.95
Category: American Single Malt
Proof: 90

Notes: Malt, floral, dark fruit, spice, cocoa

Pros: A ton of flavor comes through with a complex body. Very unique, fragrant notes. Looong finish

Cons: There is a little bit of bitterness on the finish

Summary: This is a whiskey with a lot going on. Dark malty notes collide with sweet pinot noir fruitiness, and a bit of spice brightens it up. As it finishes, there is a slight bitterness left behind that eventually fades, leaving behind a bit of a fruity malt. I feel that this is one of those unique bottles where you will love it if it's in your wheelhouse, or think "meh" if it isn't.

The Subjective Take: I personally don't think there is a bad bottle in this lineup. I was blown away by the pop of body that every bottle brought to the table, and I am especially a sucker for a pinot noir finish. This was my first dive into Westward's lineup, and I can honestly say I am a big fan. The only downside I can see is the price tag for a 90 proof whiskey, which is fair. For my palate, though, it's worth it.

Review: Bhakta 2013
MSRP: $149
Category: Finished Rye
Proof: 107.6

Notes: Light spice with HUGE dark fruit notes. Slight bitterness at the end that you would get from a brandy, with an aftertaste of more fruit and sugar.

Pros: Incredibly unique. The calvados finish comes through nicely with an apple (and maybe some grape or berry) note to it. The rye spice brightens it up with a little punch without being too offensive

Cons: The notes from the finishing process dominate the palate - if you are looking for classic rye, you won't find it here. Price is an obvious downside here, making it a VERY special occasion pour for most.

Summary: If you had Bhakta 1928, then you can expect a similar calvados flavor. In this expression, you get a little less of the bitterness (although it is still there and will turn some people away) and a little more of the rye. The sweetness of the finish combined with the punch of the rye make for an exciting pour - and one that you could pick apart for quite a while.

The Subjective Take: I didn't expect to like this more than Bhakta 1928, but I do. There is a better balance with the rye, and while you still get that bitterness of the brandy toward the end, the journey there makes it worth it, in my opinion. I'm impressed and can't wait to dig into it even more. The price is a sticking point. I would definitely buy this for a special occasion pour, BUT this is right up my alley. If you don't like what I've described here, it may not be worth it to you.

Review: Casey Jones Total Eclipse Bourbon
MSRP: $49.99
Category: Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Proof: 100

Notes: vanilla, oak, sour fruit, black pepper

Pros: This has a nice, clean flavor with a lot of body. There is a huge pop of sweetness in the beginning that is balanced out by a nice spice with some black pepper toward the end

Cons: There is a little bit of a young taste to it with some more alcohol than I'd expect at 100 proof

Summary: Is this the most unique bourbon I have ever had? No. Does it have some stand-out factors and a solid flavor profile? Absolutely. Add in the cool marketing for the eclipse, and its an interesting expression.

The Subjective Take: I am a fan of good marketing an novelty items - for that reason, I am happy I have this bottle. It will always remind me of a really cool memory (the eclipse). That being said, I think in a blind tasting, it could be beat by some similarly priced bourbons, BUUUT if you like the younger flavor, I think it would actually win

If you've had it, what did you think?
