By Jason Koop “Art is subjective”. That’s a line most of us have heard, in one form or another, in our lifetime. Put that line into a Google search, and you will get many people’s (and AI’s) take on it. My thoughts on that line have run the gamut from “What does th

By Karlissa J Davy Jones started awake. A chilly, palpable darkness surrounded the merchild, his belly resting against soft mud. He wasn’t afraid of the dark or the cold. He breathed through it. He lived in it. And yet something had unsettled him. “Uncle Jor’mun Gand?” Davy Jones whispered. ...

Exploring through Writing
My parents love to travel. As a result, my brother and I grew up traveling, both locally and afar. I discovered that each new place had its own ‘feel,’ created by the unique culture, landscape, history, language, and wildlife.
A person once told me he believes there’s no point traveling unless you do something in your travels that you’ve never done before. I understand what he means, but for me, I never had to be doing something different: what I craved wasn’t the activities, but the exploration. I craved discovering that unique feel that made the place special: made it a different experience than anywhere I’d been before.
I wanted to be doing something, but that something was wandering, sightseeing, and just sitting in a local restaurant. I wanted to be absorbed in the conversations around me, spoken in another language. I wanted to take in the architecture. I wanted to stop to examine every little bug along the path.
Yes, the bugs! Since childhood, I’ve had a soft spot for animals. To me, a place’s wildlife creates some of the feel of that place. Perhaps it’s growing up in beautiful British Columbia, Canada that has inspired this way of thinking. Our wildlife – the beavers, moose, bears, wolves, trout, eagles – are a part of our identity as a region.
My books are a reflection of that desire to explore, to define the feel of a place. In my books, I take some of the ‘feels’ I’ve gotten from my various journeys – to Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Philippines, and throughout North America – and pepper them amongst descriptions of fantastical worlds and imaginary peoples. My books give me the chance to imagine places I’ve never been, even places that don’t exist, and dream about how those places would feel.
My hope for those who read my books is that they’ll feel like explorers, travelers to another place: there are people to meet, quests to complete, obstacles to overcome – and beauty to discover.
