With the peak of the rut upon us, this is the kind of action we all dream of hearing at dawn. With a hot cow in this herd, I was fortunate to capture bulls bugling in the distance, each vying to showcase their dominance. The herd bull made sure to remind them to stay back.

What an interesting young non-typical spike bull. He’s got the potential to grow into something truly unique—if he can survive the coming years.

That right antler calcified solid while he was still in velvet. During the growth phase, it was noticeably wobbly before hardening.

With the pre-rut picking up, bulls should be hitting wallows regularly. I’ve got a camera set up where that guy came from, so I’m hopeful to capture some good content. With the drought we’re having right now, this should be a prime spot—it’s one of the few reliable wet wallows around.

I’m not sure what happened with this moose, but if anyone knows what could cause one antler to grow as a spike and the other as a paddle, let me know. Such a unique bull!
