Spreading scent as the rut picks up is pure instinct. At dusk, this young bull elk visited a dry wallow—he scraped it with his hooves and head, urinated in it, then bedded down right there to leave his scent deeply embedded in the ground.

Taken early post-rut, these younger bulls still had to establish a hierarchy. This wasn’t a brief encounter either—I captured about 30 minutes of interaction over a 5-hour span, and there’s no telling how long they kept at it once they moved out of the camera’s view.
