🏁 Further Elaborated Update on the Indy Eleven Men:
▪️June Record: 2-1-2
▪️US Open Cup: Round of 32 (eliminated)
▪️USL Jager Cup: 2-1-0, 8 points, 1st place Group 3
▪️USL Championship Record (W-D-L): 3-5-5, 14 points, 9th place East
▫️INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – June saw an Indy side pick up some important wins vs Birmingham and Pittsburgh, while also losing at a struggling Tampa side. In their wins, Indy was able to get quick 1-0 leads and rely on their defense to hold out for 1-0 wins.

For this Eleven side, however locked in defensively there will determine how good this team can be. As it stands, the midfield doesn’t quite control the midfield and becomes way too chaotic but seeing more Cam Lindley has helped stabilize them a bit. Either it’s Kizza or Amoh up front, Indy’s offense has been inconsistent - much like the defense - and tend to fade away when Indy needs them to step up…

🟠 The State of Play in Big D

🔸After a strong first regular season in the USL Super League, Dallas Trinity exited the playoffs after a semifinal loss to the eventual champions, Tampa Bay Sun. By all measures, it was a successful season. Despite a host of injuries to key players and a massive mid-season departure of first-half MVP Sam Meza, the team qualified for the playoffs, finishing third in the league standings. However, just weeks after the season’s conclusion, the club parted ways with head coach Pauline MacDonald, indicating the finish simply wasn’t good enough.

🔸One of the people who made that decision was Dallas Trinity GM and current interim manager, Chris Petrucelli. He described the decision as the result of an end-of-season analysis. “We did a thorough review at the end of the season of all areas of the club. That was an area that there was a lot of discussion about and there was a consensus. We have high ambition and we want to get better and we felt we needed to take that step to continue to progress.” The move surprised many as MacDonald was seen as a big signing for the league when it was announced.

🔸McDonald’s chances of a better finish were certainly hampered by injuries to the squad, which Petrucelli admitted in his discussion of last season. “We had matches were we had 11 and 12 players out with injury,” but one stood out as more significant than the rest. “I think the big one was Lexi Missimo. When Sam Meza left in December, we had a pretty good replacement in Lexi but then she got hurt. I think you could see, that’s when our team went into a little bit of a tailspin.”

🟠 USL Super League Offseason One
🔸 The first season of the USL Super League proved to be a rousing success. Fans were made, matches were played, and an exciting season went off without a hitch. As the first offseason is now rolling, we get to see a whole new side of the league as teams try to fix gaps and come back strong next season. It’s the first offseason for the young league and there’s plenty happening already! Let’s dive into what we know about each team’s moves so far.
🔸 The roster pages on every team’s websites are changing rapidly and by the day. Just this morning, I opened an email from Lexington SC announcing 15 players being cut from the roster, including Super Show favorite Madi Parsons. According to the team website, that leaves 10 players on the roster. UPDATE: This morning at 7amMT, the team sent out an email listing 8 players returning. Maithé López and Sarah Cox are still listed on the website, but were not on the list sent out this morning by the club. We’ve emailed the team for an update on their status. It should be noted that Lexington did mention that both Parsons and Courtney Jones were invited to preseason camp (presumably to try out for a roster spot?).
🔸 A club forever in flux in year one, DC Power is desperate to find itself and a way up the table after finishing 7th in the standings. The club’s website lists 14 players rostered currently, including their stellar goalkeeper, Morgan Aquino. Last week, the club announced the signing of University of Virginia and U.S. Youth National team midfielder Alexis Theore, so that’s exciting. Phil Nana is still listed as interim, but given how the team finished the season so strong, it would be nice to see his hard work pay off with a more official position.

🏟️ Detroit City Faces Santos Laguna
▫️If there’s anything you can say about Detroit City Football Club, it’s that they know how to throw a party. With the smoke, the goals, and a generally packed house, DCFC has one of the best shows in lower league soccer. Of course, a core component to a good party is a great guest list and over the years, Detroit has hosted some of the biggest names in international soccer. Tonight, Detroit will add to that list when it welcomes Santos Laguna to Keyworth.

▫️Santos Laguna is just the most recent big name club to make the trip to Detroit to play in an international friendly. This is the tenth in the USL Championship club’s history, with the list beginning in 2016, when FC United of Manchester played against the then-NPSL side. That list has continued to grow since with visited from Glentoran FC (2017), Venezia FC (2017), FC St. Pauli (2018), Club Necaxa (2018), Frosinone Calcio (2018), FC Juárez (2019), Club Atlas (2019), and Pumas UNAM (2024). The club has made a name for itself as a spot for teams outside the country to visit.

▫️Detroit City has a set a bar for excellence that few clubs of its level can hope for and part of that is its consistent ability to attract and entertain clubs from around the world. The club has leveraged those relationships to attract fans from its community. Last year, when the team welcomed Pumas from LigaMX, DCFC founder Sean Mann spoke with Protagonist Soccer about how the team has connected with Detroit’s communities through these friendlies. “They are great ways for us to reach out to the Latino community in the Detroit area. Those matches have really springboarded our growth.”

💻 The Life of a USL League Two Player: Facing the Top of the Table

▫️I hope you had the opportunity to read last week’s introductions, which was my way of sharing a bit about myself, but more importantly, introducing you to the Blues FC team. As you’ve heard from not just me, but also from my teammates and coaches, we are a fun, competitive, and tight-knit group, who made it quite easy for me to fit in. Once again I’ll say, it’s encouraging to be brought into a group like this, and I was happy to share my first week’s experience with you.

▫️With that said, as mentioned in the introductions, this story is about our massive game last weekend away at first-place Lionsbridge FC. This game was crucial for our playoff hopes, not only because of our position in the table, but also for the momentum we could have gained from a win. I’ll share my experience watching the game, as well as the perspectives of goal-scorer Josh Yoder and assist provider Parker Sloan in what was, to say the least, a heartbreaker.

▫️The tone for this match was set all week, with all of us aware of the stakes of the occasion. There was preparation, excitement, and as I mentioned in my previous story, nerves even from me. I unfortunately had to watch the match from home because I didn’t make the game roster, though this wasn’t a surprise considering I missed the first half of the season and attended only three training sessions before this. But as I complained to the referee through the TV, jumped out of my seat after each goal, and shielded my eyes at each Lionsbridge attack, you would have thought that I was, in fact, in attendance. I reacted in these ways, simply because this game was an absolute thriller. It was such a thriller that my roommate, who had minimal stake in the match, found himself also loudly reacting to the TV alongside me by the end of it. For the importance of the match, it certainly lived up to the hype.

🟠The Super Sun
🔸On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Sun won the first ever USL Super League final, beating Ft. Lauderdale United in extra time with a goal from powerhouse forward, Cecilie Fløe Nielsen. The 1-0 scoreline would hold up and Tampa is now crowned the queens of the USL Super League.
🔸The final was fitting way for this first season of the Super League to end, with both teams featuring plenty of interesting storylines and professional talent. These teams had played each other four times in the regular season and this matchup was very much a clash between two opponents who were evenly matched and knew each other well. The regular season matchups had yielded three draws and the final looked every bit as stalemated. While both sides had chances, Natasha Flint’s effort in the 54th minute looked every-bit the match winner, but was called back for offside. It would take another 50 minutes for Fløe to find the goal that would crown Tampa Bay the winners of the first Super League final.

🟠 Championship Pedigree
🔸 While not every player on the field this afternoon will have experience playing in championship matches, one of them brings a wealth of experience playing for championship teams in other leagues.
🔸 When Natasha Flint signed with Tampa Bay Sun, it was seen as a high-profile signing and the move has paid off throughout the season. Flint has played extensively in the UK, for multiple well-known teams including Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers, and Manchester City. In her playing time there, she scored over 100 goals and was called up to play for several age groups of the youth England national teams. She helped Manchester City win the 2014 Continental Cup and was instrumental in successful promotion battles for both Blackburn and Leicester. Her track record of success made her a big signing and she’s back it up on the field.

How We Got Here

Reader,

I suppose if you’re on this site and gone so far into it that you’ve clicked on a link to get to this letter, some of what I have to say here will be no surprise to you, the reader. I do think it important, however, to share how this site began, what we hope it will be, and why we think it important to invest our time, energy, and money.

This site was the brainchild of three guys: Ryan Stallings, myself, and Spencer Baugh. I put myself awkwardly in the middle there because chronologically it makes sense. We’ve all been friends for some time now, unified by a love of lower tier soccer and snide remarks. Ryan and I appeared as guests on a podcast, representing our supporter groups (The Red Watch and Notorious FCG, respectively). After the show was over, Ryan shot me a text asking why we had never done a podcast together. I couldn’t think of a good reason why not, though time might have been a great answer. At the time of his question, I was involved with two shows on a weekly basis, leaving little time to add another project.
